DS is turning 1 next week and I've been thinking about a cool unique thing to get him. Not that I have anything against Fisher Price and Leap Frog...but we have a bit of the usual things.

Anyways, I was thinking about getting him a set of Haba blocks that I saw in one of the threads for 1st birthday gift ideas. I really thought this Haba Fantasy Block set was cool. I don't want to spend too much money on a gift and thought this would fit the bill.

I was just wondering if there were any other Haba or wooden block sets I should think about before taking the plunge on this one. I'd like a fun colorful wooden block set something different from the usual alphabet block set. DS got some inexpensive 1 inch wood blocks from the hospital when he was there but they are kind of small and not too inspiring (at least to me that is). Would anyone have any suggestions on a good place to order from that has a good price?

I do not have these blocks, but I do know that Haba products are exceptionally well made. Here are some links to some on-line retailers. Kidsurplus.com seems to have the best price. Check out the reviews on oompa.com too! Good luck!

We have the Fantasy Blocks and I love them. The Discovery Blocks from Haba are really cool too.

There were about 3 smaller pieces of the Fantasy Blocks that I put away because I felt they were possible choking hazards for DS. He could put the whole pieces in his mouth and when I saw this I kinda freaked out and only let him play w/the larger pieces.

I also like the Haba Goblin Truck.

We also have the Haba Fantasy Blocks and DS really enjoyed playing with them when he was younger. I think it would make a great first birthday gift.

Thank you ladies, I think I will splurge and buy the set. By the way how big are the blocks...are they say about the size of Fisher Price Peek-A-Blocks??

DS also loves his fantasy blocks although, like PP, I put away a few of the smaller pieces. I recently got him six more HABA blocks (discovery blocks)-- one has a bell, another a see through panel etc. These are a great addition. DS also really likes his Goblin train.

I love the quality of these blocks! They are a little smaller than the peek-a-blocks (1.5").

I got ours at kidsurplus.com ($29.74)...ours did not come with the clear ones pictured...but they did come with the ones that I think look like breasts with pointy nipples! LOL :)
