After reading a few posts on this board, DS got a Ryan's Room City Blocks threading toy (as a gift from MIL who this time asked for suggestions). DS has used it for it's intended purpose all of maybe three times. He did great right off the bat but it's not one of those toys that holds his attention. I am wondering whether he is past the stage of playing with such toys or not there yet. DS is getting better and better at putting together the 12-piece M&D puzzles and finds peg puzzles real easy so I am not concerned about his fine motor skills, just wanted to give him more variety.

MIL was nice enought to enclose gift receipt from Target so I could get DS something else, like more Legos, which he would actually play with. I don't want to acumulate toys that DS does not play with if I can help it.

Kaya actually has a lacing toy that is a single block with lots of holes and a wooden needle nd thread. She didn't pay much attention to it at 18 months, and only now has started playing with it a bit more. However, she will play with Daddy's shoes with laces for an hour at a time. As I type, she is currently lacing and unlacing his moccasins. That keeps her occupied for a long time. I actually got a toy with laces--they're cardboard "shoes" with holes in the right places, but she doesn't find that nearly as interesting. I think she likes to also put the shoes on and off her feet, walk around a bit, lace some more and so on.

My DC, who are almost exactly the same age as your DS, don't spend too much time lacing. They play with their sets maybe once or twice a week, and they are able to do it on their own. They are just not doing anything that involves sitting for "long" periods of time (ie a few minutes!) with the exception of reading and doing puzzles.

I was talking with an owner of a small toy store just yesterday about this, since I was considering consigning one of our lacing sets. She said it seems kids are most interested in lacing from 3-6 years old. I don't know if DC will show more interest when they are a bit older, since they can already do it now. I'll probably hang on to one set, and get them more puzzles.
