My DD is turning one ina couple of weeks. I would like to get her some good quality musical instruments like maraca, drum, tambourine, egg shaker and xylophone. Does anybody have any recomendations for where I can find some fo these?

www.expressivetoys.com has lots of fun and interesting instruments. Jen, the owner, is also really nice. :)

The new toy aisle at Target has nice ones made my rhythmix. The music class that my DD goes to mostly uses these types of instruments.

we have a few from Target - egg shaker, rhythm sticks, triangle - they all seem to be very similar to the ones I have used in a music class.

They also have a great selection of CD's.

I've thought about getting this for our DS:

I've seen in it an local toy store for cheaper, but the sound is really cool.

I just bought a bunch of instruments from www.westmusic.com and am thrilled with the quality of the instruments and the service from the company. I think the instruments are much cooler than the stuff at Target (just my opinion!).

I second the recommendation for Expressivetoys. Jen is so great to work with and she's a Music Together instructor/director so if you have any questions she can guide you to some good choices for your DD's age group.

Good luck!

Best,
Mary

my DH is a band director, so we already have lots of musical instruments. Around 7 months is when she started playing/shaking them. its really cute to watch.

we have
maracas/egg shakers
regular & hand tambourine
mini cabasa
guiro
jingle bell stick
spoons

and i am wanting to get her for her 1st birthday a drum, rhythm sticks and a xylophone. I have been looking at Kindermusik for instruments, they seem to have pretty reasonable pricesfor what I am looking for. Music is such a great thing to encourage, and its has staying power. My friends older kids love playing with her instruments.

My DS is two, and this is what I bought:

-Remo Floor Tom http://www.westmusic.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=113&prodid=200747 (other sites actually have a better image of the drum--this makes it look kind of cheesy, so keep that in mind; oh, and it sounds wonderful and is sturdy)
-Remo Lollipop Drum (handled drum) http://www.westmusic.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=113&prodid=200984
-Sleigh Bells
-Two sets of Rhythm Sticks (different sizes/weights)
-Plain wooden maracas
--Low-pitch train whistle
--Triangle

I bought most of these based on what my son seems interested in when he's been given access to instruments (for instance, I don't think he likes tamborines, and I personally didn't want cymbals!). We also already have a xylophone and a keyboard, both of which he loves.

If you browse West Music's site, be aware that the section called "Early Childhood" does not have a ton--most, if not all, of our instruments are out of the other categories. Takes a little extra browsing, but worth it. I wound up with a ton of stuff in my shopping cart that I reluctantly removed, figuring I'll buy more later if he uses these a lot. West Music has some really, really cool stuff that is reasonably priced.

We have just a chintsy xylophone from Toys R Us. We got it when he was very little, much younger than a year--and it was good for then. But long-term I'm not thrilled with it.

It's pretty good - I like it for a handheld drum, though for sound alone, I like the floor tom better. But I think the colors and appearance of it are appealing to kids.

It's really shiny...I wasn't expecting that.

DS and I go to Music Together classes, and the lollipop drum is his favorite instrument in class.

www.musictogether.com also sells instruments.

I also highly recommend Expressivetoys.com!! Jen is absolutely
wonderful !! :)

I bought the Hohner brand, "Baby Band in a Bag". It comes
with 4 different musical pieces for your baby. I got
it for my son at Christmas. (He was 14 months old.)
He really likes to play with them!

Here is a link to the Hohner - Baby Band in a Bag.
