DS (almost 4yo) is crazy about maps so I've been thinking about getting a globe for his birthday. Any tips on buying one? Are they worth paying a lot of money for? Some of them seem super expensive...
Anyone's DC love theirs?

Strangely a search on this topic revealed absolutely no results!

TIA!

What a cool idea. I don't have much advice but looked them up briefly and they are pretty expensive. I did find this one at Lillian Vernon that seems nice enough if heirloom-quality isn't needed.

Gotta go but hth.

Rand McNally has some:

Edited to rephrase:

I would buy a nice globe, but not too expensive, as they do need to be replaced. Political boundaries/borders change, as do country names.

No advice but I will be checking out any suggestions made! DH and I were just talking tonight about buying a globe for DS (4yo). His friend just left for Spain and his older brother (my stepson) just left for France, Germany and Italy. This seems like a good time to teach DS about where they are. DS has always loved looking at the US map so I think he'd really like one!

My nephew, at this age, could point out many countries on a globe. They just had a basic globe and my brother spent lots of time teaching him places. I'm wondering about something electronic that will tell DS the name of the country and things about it. Not that I don't want to teach, but so that he can also enjoy it by himself! They do seem expensive though and I wonder if it's worth it.

I don't know about a globe, but I'm planning to get DS some of these (same age and also map crazy - it must be something about the age?). http://www.thepuzzleman.com/MAPS.html I had the US one when I was a kid (or one very similiar - probably not from this person) and we loved it. The best part is having the capitals on the back of the piece. It's a great way to learn the capitals (at an older age) because you can flip it over like a flash card. My siblings and I used to race to finish it.

FWIW, we have a globe and he doesn't seem that interested yet, but it's kind of small. He does like the globe beach ball.

Good luck,

DS is almost 2. We enjoy playing with this one, and pointing out where friends/family are and where we are going on the plane.
