Just thought I would update in case anyone else has a child with a hair attachment.

I cut a chunk of my hair and ordered one of the dolls from loveybabies (http://www.loveybabies.com) DS loves it. He woke up crying the first night we got it, I was sleeping with the doll in my shirt so it would have my smell, so I gave it to him and he immediately started to play with the hair. He goes to sleep with the hair wrapped around his hand. He still wants me, but I can give him the doll and he'll happily take it. Here's a picture of them, we got the blue one. My hairdresser cut a piece from the middle layers, you can't even tell it was cut. She also supplies the hair if you don't want to cut your own.

Yes, some may think it's extreme/weird to cut your own hair, and it's not the cutest doll, but DS is getting very attached to it, and that's all that matters. So, thank you punrocker for finding this doll, I think it's the solution I was looking for.

I posted in the Lounge about DS using my hair as a lovey. Some mamas suggested finding a toy with "hair" that DS can use. It doesn't have to be a doll, anything that has silky longish "hair" like material so DS can run his hands through it will probably work. DS is 17 months, and he still mouths things. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, Nicci

I'm one of the PPs that suggested a toy with "hair". We got our stuffed skunk (Douglas brand) at a Barnes and Noble in the children's section.

Here it is online:

This link has a whole bunch of skunks listed but most look too realistic to me. The one we have is the one right below the skunk crossing sign. It was 8.50 at B & N. It's really nice and it's weighted so it stands upright (even though the website shows it at an angle)

DD1's other hairy lovey was the clown at Gymboree. We bought the puppet. It's nice because it has red yarn hair that she could grab onto.

I bought my DS a fake hairpiece from a drugstore. He liked it for a little while. But he still prefers my hair.

Not quite the real thing but how about something like this?

All those options could work. Thanks. I'll see what he likes.

Not quite real hair, but my DS LOVEs to lay with his waldorf doll which i made him and stroke the hair... You can customize what kind of hair you want at some places, too... or, make one yourself, it's really not that hard, the directions, at least from Joy's are pretty easy!

I'm not sure if you're still looking for a solution, but I came across this site and remembered your post. You can have a lovey made with your own hair! Apparently, the creator was in a similar situation, and came up with the doll out of desperation. :)

Oh my gosh. Someone actually does this. I jokingly talked about doing this, never imagining it was possible. But is it a little freaky, you know voodooish for you child to have a doll with your hair???

ETA. I read through the testimonials on the site, and these dolls seem to work for other kids with hair attachment issues. And what better way for him to feel safe than to snuggle up to my hair. I think I'm about to cut off a chunk of my hair for DS...the things we mother's do for out kiddos!!

I wish I had known about these when DS was a baby! To this day, he still wants to play with my hair to go to sleep. I swear I'm going to have to go to college with the boy!

ETA: I love the mommy necklaces on that site. Exactly what I've been looking for!:)

My DS has been carrying around an Eeyore (from Winnie the Pooh)stuffed animal since October. He LOVES the hair and as a matter of fact our first Eeyore is bald from him playing with his hair.

DS has a hair fixation as well. He loves single strands and wraps them around his finger and sucks on them. GROSS, I KNOW!!

Nicci, I'm so glad it worked out for you and your DS! :)
