DS is really into hats right now and pretending (pirates, captain, police, cowboy, etc) so I'm trying to start a dress-up box and would love some suggestions. Unfortunately, I missed the idea of halloween costumes last year so I'm now looking for some great ideas!

oriental Trading company has some great sheap hats and things that can be used for dress up. Many of the items (but not all) come in sets of 12 - like 12 child sized cowboy hats, but they are inexpensive enough that I bought them and kept a few extra and then and I made gifts out of the extras for DS's little friends.

The web site can be a bit overwhelming but they will send you a paper catalog which I found much easier to go through - they often have 20% off deals or free shipping too

The dress up clothes at kidsurplus are really great quality. I think they go under the name "great pretenders" I bought the knight costume set (about $20) and it is so well made. soft fabric and great detail. They also have a few different style hats for about $3 each. I picked up my son's pirate hat at my local IParty store, it was about $3. They have other hats too, cowboy, race car driver, etc..

I've read good recommendations on this board about the costumes that Toys R Us sells.

My son's current favorites are to dress up as a pirate, a king or a hero. All three use play silks

I tie a play silk around his waist and tie another around his head to be a pirate....or top with his pirate hat and he is the Captain.

for a king, I made a crown out of felt and we tie on a silk cape, and a hero is just a silk cape.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I went to kidsurplus and found a ton of hats! Here is what I ordered:

Train Engineer's Cap
Viking Hat
Western Straw Sheriff Hat
Police Cap
Wizard Hat
Yellow Construction Hat
Red Fire Chief Hat
Pirate Hat
Jewel Crown
Cowboy Hat

Yes, I guess I kind of went crazy but DS is really into hats and pretending right now, partly due to his new obsession with the Backyardigans (which isn't too terribly offensive - at least there isn't anything too scary). I figured the hats were a good place to start and now I can hit the thrift stores to add some clothing items.

Just FYI, I had to choose "cool things" on the Kidsurplus site and scroll and scroll and scroll. If I just searched hats, not nearly as many came up.

Now...to find some fun/cool box to make into a dress up chest... A momma's job is never done...! :)

Hey Maryann!

Love the hats that you got off Kidsurplus!! I may need to
get a few of them for my kids! They love to dress-up. :)

On the kidsurplus website, I noticed that all of these cool
hats are made by Jacobson Hat Company.
So in the search field, you can just type in "Jacobson"
and all of their hats should pull up.

Thanks for letting us know where to get these fun hats!
I think my favorite is the Viking Hat. :)

I don't know who is more excited, me or DS, about the impending arrival of the hats! If I could ever figure out how to post a picture again, I'll try and post a photo or two. I know DS is going to love them when they get here.
