I feel like we are in such a toy slump here. I went to TRU and was so overwhelmed that I left with no new toys! I have a 19 month old ds.

My friend just gave me a Baby Tad Leapfrog that DS loves! She also gave us some nice big trucks but he's not terribly interested in them yet.

I'm just wondering what are the big toy successes in your home!

TIA,

Susan

Eileen--

Thanks! What's a kiddio?

Also, what does Kaya do with the magnets? Just take them on and off the fridge?

For us, it's anything train-related:
Thomas wooden train set
Fisher Price train set
Peek-a-Blocks train
His ride-on train
Sesame Street Train Station book
Fast Trains DVD

Also, a cup of ice, large tupperware bowl, and a hose.

It's the Kiddio Supertrike (made by Kettler) from mytoybox.com that was for $89 shipped. Kaya loves being "walked" around the neighborhood. She's learning all sorts of skills with steering and it's fascinating to watch her figure it out and also be able to make right, left, or straight turns based on verbal commands.

For the magnets, she started out just taking them off the fridge. She had great fun pulling them off the fridge as fast as she could. Eventually, she started pushing the buttons on the pad and dancing to the music. Now she loves to try the different letters and learn the sounds the letters make. At this point, she can identify most of the letters by sight.

Duplo
Ikea toddler feeding stuff (we got her a set of the cutlery, plates, cups, and bowls, and
a 1-liter measuring cup -- I found a small pitcher somewhere else eventually). She loves, loves, loves to "cook" with these. They're bulkier to store than ones that are meant for play, but I think she has more fun with them, especially because she likes matching up the colors.
Big storage box, 2 pounds of macaroni, measuring cups (put on a cloth to ease clean-up).
Books, books, books.
Crayons, stickers.
Painting with water. Not the paint-with-water books (we have some, but she's not crazy about them). Nope, cheap construction paper, a brush, a dish of water.
Stuffed animals and blankets, or better yet, diapers (she has a bear I made diapers for out of fleece scraps and velcro).
Peg board with big pegs. http://www.kidsurplus.com/ler0594.html
Magnets (we have letters but she also adores a cheap set of round magnets in various colours from Ikea)
A stupid horse hand-puppet. http://www.sciplus.com/singleItem.cfm?terms=7565&cartLogFrom=Search

I've been looking at all of the Kettlers and can't really decide which one is best for DS. What made you choose the Kiddio? I noticed that it's less expensive but can't figure out what the more expensive ones have that the Kiddio doesn't. Would DS need extras? Thanks in advance.

The two major extras that the kiddio does not have is 1) the ability to lock the steering and 2) the ability to have a free wheel (so you can push without the pedals moving). We decided that we could do without it and while it takes a bit more work to "walk" Kaya, she is also learning a lot about steering and pedalling with her feet. I think for her (we got it when she was 2), it's totally age appropriate and she learns a lot while using it. When we do need to speed up, though, we can by pushing down on the pushbar and just raising the front wheel a little.

Thanks for your response. I'll have to let DS try one to see if we need the extras. Thanks again.

My 19 month old dd LOVES her LP sets too. Picked up a minivan (with baby and stroller) for a $1 yesterday at a garage sale. That is all she has played with for the last two days. She LOVES it! Best dollar ever spent!

She also likes pretend play with food and dishes.
Blocks and shape sorter sets (even though she has pretty much mastered them, they are still fun to play with)
bubbles
play-doh
books
golf ball and clubs
Any balls, really
Baby doll and bottle

Great question because I am feeling like we're in the same rut!!
