We have a birthday party coming up next week for a 3 year old boy who's into the typical toddler boy stuff like trains and dinos. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good book to give him as a gift? Are there any essential dinosaur books out there?

TIA,
Jennifer

Curious George! I know it isn't a dinosaur nor a train book, but my DS who LOVES both ADORES his "Curious" books. Just an idea... ;-)

You might try getting him a pop up dinosaur book:

my two year old LOVES george, my four year old likes him alot, PLUS, there is a curious george and the dinosaurs book. The two year old sleeps with a curious george book at night. (odd lovey thread made me remember)

We also have - and love - how do dinosaurs say goodnight. :)

Finally, the favorite book of last summer for my guys, then 3 and 1 was "dinosaur time" by peggy parish (i think). They could recite the entire thing (well, the one year old grunted, but I of course understood him), and if the child doesn't have it already, it is great. One of those short, simple readers, but they wouldn't go anywhere without it, for months. ...there were big dinosaurs and small dinosaurs. fast ones and slow ones. some ate plants, some ate meat.... sorry. flashbacks. And, fwiw, we got other books, with popups and puzzles, but that remained the favorite.

I've seen this one at Costco and wanted it for myself! It looks really cool, but I think he might be a bit on the destructive side for such a book just yet!

I've seen that one in stores several times, but never picked it up. I'll have to take a look at it next time!

Thanks, I'll keep those in mind. He has a tendancy to get into trouble like CG, so maybe it would be a good match? ;) Maybe I can find the Curious George and dinosaur book that Lynnie mentioned. Thanks gals!

I wouldn't have time to order that for this party, but that looks awesome! I'm definitely going to be ordering those for my girls! Thanks so much for the link!

It's kind of silly, but my nephews LOVED this book at that age (still do, years later): Ten Little Dinosaurs (Wiggle Eyes).

I think MIL got ours at marshalls. George goes to a museum, and climbs up on the dinosaur. Its one of the newer ones, so not by the original author, but the kids don't know the difference.

Since you have 2 girls, I thought I'd let you know that I just received an email that they are launching a new book (beginning July 1) called "My Very Own Fairy Tale" - it sounds super cute! Same free shipping code will apply. I can't wait to order them for my nieces!

We got this book for Christmas, and it's really cute! We keep it put away, and only bring it out when we're having reading time, (no independent reading), but ds loves it!

Jennifer - Carson just got this as a gift for his birthday this past week. Not dinosaurs but construction trucks:

The book is interactive and you are able to push the dump truck, excavator, front loader and cherry picker around predetermined spots. He loves it and its become part of night time story time.

HTH!
