Help me find some cars and trucks please!

My DS who is 16 months loves to play with his older sisters matchbox cars. Of course he puts them right in his mouth and I am worried he may choke on a tire or something.

Does anyone know if they make something similar to a matchbox but for younger children? He has a few larger cars but really likes these small ones. Plus I would love to have some that fit in my diaper bag for dinners out!

They're not quite as small as matchbox cars, but small enough to be diaper bag/purse toys. My DD really likes them - I think we got them when she was around 20 months. There are three or four different sets of them if you don't like the racing fleet.

My DS is 19 months and also loves matchbox (daddy keeps supplying him) and I was worried. We have the plastic cars above and he shows little interest (could be personal preference because I think they are totally cute) While still not officially age appropriate, (I do not leave him unattended with them) and I found these on ebay:

I also got the postal truck from same seller. They are metal diecast and have the nice weight of matchbox, but are not nearly as small. DS has had a deathgrip on his BUS ever since they arrived.

I was going to recommend these. DS loves them! We keep one or two in the car and he carries them when we go shopping. My sister got the first two sets at Walmart and I saw just last week that my local Target now has them for $7.99 (set of 5 or 6, can't remember).

I can second the advice on the Playskool cars. Ds also likes playing with the Tiny 'n Tuff series from Mega Blocks http://www.megabloks.com/en/products/key-product.php?phrase=tiny

Again, they are bigger than matchbox cars but easily fit in a diaper bag. Some even come with their own little garage and ds just loves "parking" his cars.

Ds is 20 months old now but has been playing with both sets cars since he was about 12 - 15 months old.

I have these cars and I don't like that they don't really wheel around well. The same cars in bigger size do, but these small ones don't have wheels that work properly. Just letting you know.

everytime i go into our local toystore i promise the boys that they can get 1 thing, and normally if they can't decide i'll end up getting each of them one of these. they have a trillion different sizes from just bigger than a match box, to as big as a wipes container and a bit bigger!

i'm sure that kids could gnaw on these things forever and nothing will come off.

we also have the playskool cars from above (mine roll just fine) and honestly, neither of these take the place of hot wheels. i'll admit, charlie played with hot wheels from 12mo on and max has started playing with them. i once took a screwdrier and tried to pry the wheels off and anything else that wasn't attached to the body and nothing popped off, and they are always in my presence when playing with them, so i let them go at it. the wheels of both these cars are held on the same way as the hot wheels so if hot wheels tires pop off, so can these ones.

so...in charlie's 3 years, not one thing has popped off any of his over 30 hotwheels & hotwheels monster trucks (which by the way, are much bigger than reg hotwheels and the tires are much bigger too) charlie LOVES these http://www.hotwheels.com/showcase/product.aspx?product_number=21572&category_id=7553
