My son just got a large Lego Duplo Thomas set for his 2nd birthday. Just wondering if people out there like the wooden Thomas/Brio/IKEA sets better, or if anyone out there really likes the Lego sets for a 2 year old. One thing that I do really like is that the Duplo sets and the Quatro sets work together. My son had gotten 1 or 2 Quatro Lego sets for his 1st birthday and it is nice to know that he can incorporate them into playing with this new train set.

Just as a side note - even if we were to exchange this for a wooden set, we would not be going all out and getting a train table, etc. Although my son likes trains, he hasn't caught the "train bug" yet and we just don't have the room.

Thanks!

IMO, they are two entirely different beasts. We have the legos and the wooden railway.

We have gotten Kaya the IKEA wooden set, though we haven't opened it yet because she's just not that into trains yet (we may give it to her for Christmas). She would much rather play with Lego. I think it may depend a little on the child, but I agree with Angie that Lego and regular Train Sets are two different beasts. If I do get Kaya another train set (other than the IKEA one), it will probably be the Lego one just because it's much more likely to get play time. Plus she already has a bunch of duplo that it would be compatible with. Plus, I have a bunch of regular Lego train sets so it might be fun for her to have her own Lego train set. :) If she keeps on liking both her Duplos and my regular Lego, I'll probably give the IKEA train set to someone else for Christmas and just get her the Lego train.

eta: I may get her this set instead (http://shop.lego.com/product.asp?p=3771) to avoid the whole Thomas thing, since she doesn't watch it anyway....

Actually, my son got the Thomas one from my dad and the one you posted here from my brother. They are obviously both compatible, so I am starting to think that we'll keep them both and if he becomes more interested in trains, consider getting a wooden starter set for Christmas or next year's birthday.

Thanks!!
