I realise our collection has got a bit stale. My son was a late "reader" (LOL, I mean, only in the last 6 months or so will he happily sit on our lap while we read)--so I guess that caught me by surprise and now I realise what we have he's probably outgrown...And reading yet another chapter of Railroad Rhyme gives me suicidal thoughts ;)

What are your kids reading?

Colwyn's favorite books right now are Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends, Jane Kurtz's Rain Romp, and Peter Harris' Night Pirates.

We get a lot of books from the library.. I usually just let Colwyn pick out what looks good to him, and then I'll grab a few that I've heard good things about. We try out a lot of books that I wouldn't ordinarily have picked up, since it doesn't cost us any money. :)

DS is over three. He really likes the Franklin series and Curious Georges. He also, amazingly, LOVES his "poem book" which is The Seasons in the Poetry for Young People series, edited by John N. Serio (includes poems by Emily Dickinson, etc.)

At a slightly younger age, he really liked The Big Red Barn, Go Dog Go, and Jump Into January (available from www.barefootbooks.com)

Have fun reading!

ETA: Want to add Fall is Here. Seasonally appropriate and a counting book. Here's a link to it on Amazon

Everybody Poops (seriously, it's hysterical)

Books by Mercer Mayer but not Little Critter. Titles we have include There Are Monsters Everywhere, There's An Aligator Under My Bed, and There's Something In My Attic.

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie and the others as mentioned by a pp

Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery, Is There Realy A Human Race, and Tell Me Again About The Night I Was Born all by Jamie Lee Curtis. The last one is a book about adoption, and while Peyton is my bio child I bought the book because it was such a sweet story, I think it's totally beautiful. And you know, I think it's good that he knows mama's have their babies in all sorts of ways. :)

Where The Wild Things Are

We have tons, but these are the ones he asks for the most. Besides his Thomas stories, which kinda make me want to hurl as I have read them one million times by now.

In addition to some of the favorites mentioned here, my 3 years old son also loves any book that has to do with fire truck. We must have at least 10 different books on fire stuffs and I have to read at least 3 every night.....(How do you ladies do the "rolling eye" thing?):) Anyway, another is the TONKA series of Working Hard with the (Fire Truck, Rescue Helicopter, Dump Truck etc.....) You name the machinery, he loves it. :) Here's an example of one:

The other favorites, NOT Machine-Related, are the Alphabet Adventure and Alphabet Mystery by Audrey and Bruce Wood. I love these as the artwork is beautiful and they help to teach him the alphabet.

Tails is DS's absolute FAVORITE book! He "reads" it so much I'm going to have to get him another copy for christmas (seriously, it has a large pink stain of unknown origin on one of the pages and the boar no longer has a tail). Good to know that older kiddos are liking it as well.

Besides all the great books already mentioned, I wanted to add the I Spy books - my son LOVES them - when we go to the bookstore, he heads right for them, and we go thru all of them...he even likes the ones that are a little bit harder (early reader series.)
