Does anyone have any suggestions for a good first tool set/tool bench and/or a good transportation play mat? DS will be ~16 months this winter, so I'm looking for something around 18+ months that he can play with now (Christmas, actually), but also grow into and enjoy for a long time!
Thanks!

I got a road play mat at IKEA for $15. They also have them at Home Depot and Menards.

"Hearthsong"- that's the name of the catalog I got, accidentally threw away, and couldn't remember the name of!

Thanks!

Kohls has these-we bought the construction one this weekend. I don't think they were on sale, tho, but I bet they will go on sale, eventually-that's how kohls is, right? ;)

I was at Tuesday Morning earlier today and they had a bunch of different kinds of tool type items. I saw a toolbench with tools, they also had a smaller wood tool carry all with tools/nails, etc. They also had plastic tool sets too.

For tools, I got my son this toolbox set when he was 16 months last christmas.

It has been a favorite ever since, still played with daily at 2 years. The tools in this set are actually age appropriate for 18months plus, unlike a lot of the others which are geared for the 3+ set and have a lot of smaller nails and other pieces / pointier pieces you'd have to take away. I've seen it at TJMaxx in the past, and my local independant toy store carries it.

Hope it helps

I'm not sure what ages this is recommended for, but DS received the Home Depot tool bench as a gift when he was 24 mos. He still plays with it every day, a year later.

Here's a wooden tool bench:

The bench is probably for a 2 year old and up

and a wooden tool kit:

I don't know about a bench, but my son got the IPlay tool box that luckymom linked to above. It is also a favorite around here. It is 18+ and I agree that it seems very age appropriate. No choking hazards, and the tools store in the box.

ZipBins unzip to become play mats:

I don't have one though, so no experience IRL.
