If you're interested in the Little People nativity set, you might also like some of the other, in my opinion cuter, children’s nativities that exist. I remember how much I liked playing with a manger scene as a child. When I started googling, I found many options. With a few exceptions, I only listed ones priced at $45 or less. Here’s my pretty long list, with my favorites listed first:

www.casuallivingusa.com/default.aspx?page=product&sender=csearch&uid=375990 Touchable Nativity wooden, cute, $30. Better photo, same price, and probably less chance of getting on a junk mail list as "Children's Nativity Set, sale $30" at www.catholicsupply.com/christmas/nativities-home.html

www.agreatergift.org/Holiday/Nativities.aspx Items made by artisans in developing nations, including handpainted wooden nativity (balsa wood) $55, children’s nativity $13, wood nativity $45 (very freeform and Montesorri-like), ceramic chulucanas $45.

www.catholicsupply.com/christmas/nativities-home.html Dozens listed, but best for kids (Page 1) the 12 piece plush doll set $40, plush nativity dolls (5 piece) with keeper bag $18, wooden olivewood puzzle $18, (Page 2) 9 piece figure set with stable $40 (painted wood, nice detail), Mary Engelbreit set with unique characters as kids ($60 but very cute), (Page 3) ceramic nativity with kid characters $10, (Page 4) wooden children’s nativity table piece and carrying case $40, carved wood 11 piece $40 (with wire designs)
Photo of inside of children's tabletop nativity at ebay auction 290042399962 or www.cherrylanecollection.com/html/11003.html

www.agreatergift.org/Holiday/Nativities/HolidayNatOther.aspx, there are finger puppets $28 (knitted) and a beanbag figure nativity $50

www.agreatergift.org/LastChanceSale/Holiday/LastNativities.aspx (last chance/sale section) a stuffed Guatemalan nativity and a cloth/wood nativity (Waldorf doll-like).

www.tenthousandvillages.com/catalog/dept.php?cart_category_id=37 Items made by artisans in developing nations. Soft cloth nativity $24, $28 Sri Lankan nativity in bright colors and many pieces. May be made of MDF.

www.bethanyroberts.com/Christmas_Gifts_Kids_Toys_R_Us_childrens_nativity_ sets.htm including Playmbile, Veggie Tales, Russian nesting dolls

www.babyuniverse.com/pro.asp?id=40374&rc=pricerunner40374 Freestanding puppets.

And then several where the characters are kids and thus might appeal to children.

You put together a great list!

I just picked up a nice one at Costco this week for less than $30, but I couldn't find it on their website to post a link.

We got DS this one last year. I think it is quite nice, especially for the price. I'm looking forward to getting it out in a couple of weeks.

Can you post a photo of the Costsco one? You know that after making such a long list, I am tantalized at the prospect of another one.

I like several of these so much I think I am going to buy both my kids and my nieces/nephews one.

We have it too! I love it. I did have to confiscate a few pieces: the angel's star and wings fell off (were glued on) and the little rectangular shelter thing always falls apart. I think the shepherd's staff will be the next to go. The baby Jesus figure is glued into the manger, and I think it could pop out with a bit of pressure, so that's something to be aware of if you have little ones. Otherwise it seems very solid and durable. I just love the way it looks.

My digital camera is not working, but people are selling them on ebay, of course for a lot more than the Costco price. Here is an item # 160049719894. If somebody knows how to post the picture, I would appreciate it!!

Wow, thanks for the great suggestions. I've been wanting a children's nativity, and I'm sure one these will be perfect.

not exactly the cheapest way to go about it, but I thought I would add it. I decided last year (after much agonizing) to get the Holztiger nativity for my dc. I am buying a few pieces each year. Last year I bought Joseph, Mary & Baby Jesus, and this year I bought the Three Kings.

Here is the link:

http://www.padilly.com/lanaset.html

btw - the link is to an entire set, you can buy the pieces seperately

Karen,

Those are awesome! I need to get at least one kids one this year for my kindergarten class and now I have tons of choices. :-) You made my night!!! ;-)

Hope you and the girls are well! We didn't get to meet up this summer, but I would still like too. LMK.

Did you buy your separate pieces from Padilly?

I really like the look of this nativity set! It's beautiful.

Corie, I actually bought my pieces this year and last year from Maukilo. With the 10% off it is a tiny bit less expensive than Padilly, but Padilly's everyday prices are less expensive.

Padilly has a better selection of Holztiger in general. I just bought a bunch of animals from there which should be arriving today (so excited!). It also seems like Maukilo is out of stock right now of some of the Nativity figures.

I really like the Holztiger, but honestly have never seen the other wooden sets in person so I cannot compare.

For budget shoppers (lol) Marshall's had a 2D wooden set today. A little cartoony looking, sort of like if Little People were 2D and made of wood. But for $14.99, it was kind of cute. I can't remember the name now, but it was in a flat-pack box like the M&D food sets etc. (definitely not M&D though).

I have a couple of Ostheimer animals to give DD this year (ox, donkey, sheep). Have been trying to get my parents on board to start adding to her set year by year.

Wow, I like your first one (which is also available at Constructive Playthings). I only wish shipping wasn't $7.95 for all three places. Still, the look of the set is similar enough to our Holztiger animals so that Kaya could have more animals present at the nativity if she wanted. :)

I'll have to think on this one...

Can you stand one more?

Sorry I just love playmobil. Not in the same class as the wooden ones above, but cuter than LP IMO.

Our "real" collector set is by Fontanini. The pieces are plastic, but great quality. I let DS play with them. I haven't put out all the accessories because he still puts stuff in his mouth. But I thought I'd mention it as another alternative.

This is the "basic" set we have, and then we buy a few more pieces each year.

Oh, wow, where did you get the set in the picture? That's the nativity I grew up with, and I can't find it anywhere. Similar sets are available, but none exactly like that. My parents don't know where it came from, since it was a gift. Plastic pieces would be perfect, too.

We received this as a gift from a dear friend. I just put it out. The reason I wouldn't let DC play with the entire set is that the manger is covered in glued on dried moss. Very messy, but beautiful. I like that each piece comes with a little informational booklet, even each animal.

We buy our stuff locally, but as I said the brand is Fontanini and the Manufacturer is Roman. You should be able to find all of it online. I just googled Fontanini and grabbed that picture (but it is the one we have).

Does Costco have the set in stores? Where is it - - with wrapping paper, etc? I haven't seen it at our store, but I guess I haven't really looked. Thanks for the tip!
