Surface cleaning stuffed toys?

I have a few toys - stuffed animals, Cabbage patch doll - that state they should be surface cleaned only. What's the best way to clean?

Although I have never cleaned a Cabbage Patch doll, I throw all stuffed animals into the washing machine and even into the dryer, including barking puppies. I figured if I couldn't clean them then I wasn't going to give them back to DD dirty and would throw them away so if the washer/dryer ruined them I would be in no worse position. So far every single one has come out fine - including the barking puppies who continue to bark.

I have also thrown all the stuffed animals, even a corelle doll (kinda like a cabbage patch doll), into the washing machine on gentle cycle and dry with low heat. So far they all held up quite well.
