My daughter will be 1 next month and the family is asking what to get her for her birthday. I was hoping you guys would have some great ideas and suggestions. My DH and I would prefer things w/out batteries. Thanks in advance for your help.

Music and music videos are favorite in our house. We sing and dance all the time. My fall back can be music videos b/c the kids know they must dance. Perfect thing that allows me to unload or load the dishwasher, or to unwind and dance myself. Our DVD fav's: Laurie Berkner Band, Ralph's World (both DVD's) and They Might be Giants. CD only we like all mentioned, plus Dan Zanes and The Beatles (a must for our Jude----Hey Jude.)

One book I can't recommend enough is So Big, it is an Elmo book. At one they will really start to follow the book can do as Elmo does (So Big, Peekaboo, clap,...) A close second is One Bear. E does skip to the end to see himself some days. Any Katz books and Boyton(sp) are always a hit.

Do you do storyhour at a store? What about a gc for that store if you do?

We RARELY do fast food, but Grandma and Grandpa send gift cards for holidays so we get 'treats' from them. Grandpa goes to McD's with his little brother all the like (Big Brothers Big Sisters) so McD's is a special spot. On a good day we can stop and get ice cream at McD's from Grandma and Grandpa. Special b/c it is always from them. Going to McD's with my Grandpa was a special treat for us when young, I guess what goes around comes around.

Classes at My Gym, Gymboree, Little Gym? J at 16 months really enjoyed the classes we attended with him.

Balls, balls and more balls. This was the age we got a ball pit toy for J, that the balls outgrew and were moved to our old camping tent.

Another idea... tent! We have 2 b/c 1 bigger one was not enough with the 2 kids.

Kitchen stuff is a hit around this age. We never got more than the small Little Tykes stuff, but it has been well loved.

Do you have child size chair, or table and chair set? Studies say children needs seats their size.

A dream toy for us is a bucket of Viking cars/trucks ($30-ish). I believe boys and girls need cars and dolls. One of these days I'll break down and get one of these.

Happy b-day!

My daughter loved musical stuff when she was 1yo (and still does at 2yo). Egg shakers, tambourine, clackers, wrist bells, drum, things of that nature. I ordered her an Early Childhood Rhythm set set from Empire Music, ( http://tinyurl.com/35aq6u )
which is a Cnd. site, but I'm sure you have the same type of shops in the U.S.

Around 1.5yo she became very into the Schleich plastic animals and they are still her most used toy. Plus they are inexpensive enough to make them fun to buy a new one every now and then to introduce a new animal or dinosaur. They play in the Little People house, make footprints with paint and in play dough, accompany her on walks in her pocket, create a zoo around her train track ... and my personal favorite is the hippo because his mouth is open wide and he often demonstrates how to brush his teeth or eat a new food ... all kinds of good stuff!

My son is turning 1 in a couple of months, so I've been thinking about this, too. If you do a search, you'll find lots of threads with great ideas. Based on them, I already bought a Radio Flyer Walker Wagon:

I'm also planning to purchase these Haba fantasy blocks:

I'm on the lookout for some stacking cups, but haven't been able to find some that I like. Lots of moms have raved about playsilks for their kids right around the 1-year mark, so I've been looking at those, too.

HTH with a few ideas!

If you live in a warmish climate, have outdoor space and she's getting ready to walk, a Cozy Coupe car. :)

DS just turned 1, and here are some of his/my favorite gifts:

-kid-sized rocking chair (he's a little young for it, but loves to be put in it and rocked)

-Books. Board and cloth, especially. Can't have too many.

-A tunnel!!! OMG, this is the best thing ever. We're going to get him a tent, too, but you can get a tent and a tunnel as a set.

-Ride on/walk behind toy. He's starting to walk pretty well, but still loves to push his walk-behind. And he likes riding, but hasn't figured out how to propel himself yet.

Ry,

Do you have any particular brand recommendations for the tunnel? This sounds very intriguing. :)

Thanks!

If their budget is bigger, how about a Kinderzeat?

Tub toys are good gifts, too.

We got him/are giving him

Weebles Castle it is noisy I know, but he is really enjoying it.

Loves Walker Wagon (he has been walking for about 3 months) now he likes us to pull him

G&G are getting him a ride on, which is not too soon IMO

Books and music he loves to sit and read especially Boynton and Carle, and he dances to music and loves to play his instraments.

Blocks, he is beginning to stack them not just knock them down

Loves playsilks too because he loves peak a boo

A tent, he really loves to get in there.

We would get him a kangaroo climber, but we are moving and don't know how much room we will have

Large Wood Activity cubes are great for pulling up on, motor skills and problem solving.

I think it is the Pacific Play Tents See Me connecting tunnel. It's got mesh panels so you can see in/out of the tunnel. Very, very fun.

Thank you! That looks like it would be a blast. Interesting that the age recommendation is 3 years and up, because I don't see why a crawler (9 months+) wouldn't be able to have fun in it.

Too bad it's out of stock at Babycenter, but I'll look for it elsewhere.

Thanks again!

I have seen tents and tunnels at IKEA. I believe others have seen them (Ryan's Room brand??) at Cosco. Target sometimes has them also. My girls have loved the tunnel at gymboree from about 11 months.
