View Full Version : Keeping Play Kitchen / Toys in a 3 year old's Bedroom?

Hi all, it's been a while since I've posted here... in any case I'm expecting our second child in a few weeks, and we are renovating our guest room for my 3 year old daughter to move into so the baby gets her old room. It's a good sized room, bigger than her last one, and she's looking forward to moving in.
It dawned on DH and I the other night that since DD was born her stuff has slowly but surely taken over our living room! (yeah, like what did I expect). The biggest dilemma that we dscovered is that her play kitchen (the Costco model) has now occupied the spot where I kept her Pack & Play, which is where I'd like to keep it again so her brother can use it & we have a convenient place to change him & put him down for naps downstairs.
I'd like to find a new place to store her kitchen, and DH suggested that we move it up to her new bedroom. She certainly would have the room up there for it. I'm concerned about her getting up in the middle of the night & playing with it (or playing with it when she should be in bed), not to mention tons of wooden food pieces all over my second floor... but that's another story.
So I guess my question is has anyone here kept their kid's play ktchens in their bedrooms, and has it caused any problems or issues? How about toys in general? Like I said, we have generally avoided it for fear of her playing instead of sleeping, but the time is coming when we need to have more room in our living room. I know when I was growing up I had my toy chest in my room but I wonder now as a parent if that's what I should do!!
Thanks!

DD's kitchen is in her bedroom and has been since a few days after her birthday party. So far there have been no problems with her waking up to play with it or staying up to play with it. Can't help you with the wooden food everywhere though...

I've been having a similar dilemma, although we're a one child household, and we're not expecting.
Right now, in DD's bedroom, she has tons of books in her room in a bookcase plus a dollhouse bookcase. Then she has one of those Disney Princess bin organizers filled with toys, plus a baby doll crib, and 2 baby doll pack n plays with dolls and stuffed animals, and a baby doll high chair. And she has a Disney Cinderella folding table, and chair (the other chair it came with is in her closet).
Upstairs, down the hall, we have a playroom filled with stuff. I wanted to keep all the toys out of DD's room but sometimes, DD and I like just hanging out in her room, and it's nice to have toys in there. I grew up with toys in my room -- we didn't have a playroom -- and I never had a problem. So far, no problems with toys in DD's bedroom.
My problem is downstairs -- our family room has literally become a second playroom, totally filled with toys, and totally overrun. I'm debating about moving all of the toys out of the family room, and making DH's office the new playroom, and moving his office desk and computer stuff to a small space near the garage so that we can have an adult family room.
My DD's kitchen and a bunch of other stuff is in her room. I have no problem with her getting up to play when she's supposed to be sleeping.
Where is your DD going to be while your DS is in the PnP for naps?
Our play kitchen is in the kitchen. Both DD and DS have some toys in their bedrooms and it's usually not a problem that they are playing instead of sleeping, except during naptime for my DS.

I have a 3 yo DS. Our house is small so his Costco kitchen and train table, along with the majority of his other toys have always been in his room. We've never had a problem with him getting up and playing in the middle of the night. Sometimes in the morning he will get up and play and that gives me a little more sleep :) .

Ah, a little more sleep in the morning... now that would be nice! ;-) This is all very encouraging - thanks!
Caroline, I haven't thought so far as to where DD will be during naps. It's very possible that we'll take DS upstairs to his room to nap if it becomes an issue. Hopefully when the weather gets better we'll play outside for a bit. Honestly, DD was a strong sleeper - she'd sleep through anything while in her P&P so I'm kindof hoping DS follows suit.

Every single toy Toby has except for his easel lives in his room (at least at night- during the day he can bring a bin into the living room to play with) and it has never been a problem. He has a train table, a kitchen, a zillion books etc in there. Like a pp pointed out- if anything, Toby will wake up and start playing on the weekends, giving us a few more minutes of sleep :) If she starts playing instead of sleeping you can always move it out but most kids I know have most if not all toys in their rooms and I don't know anyone who has had to take toys out of the room to get a child to sleep.

Ours has been there since we moved a year ago and lost our finished basement. It's been fine. About 1/2 of his toys are up there now and its great when I'm on the second floor cleaning/working because he has different toys that hold his interest in his room. He's upstairs playing with some toys in his room now.

I'm glad you asked this question! We thought about putting DS's train table in his room when he moved to his big boy room but didn't out of fear that he'd play trains all night instead of sleeping. But, he has tons of books in there (his favorite thing ever!) and he doesn't play or 'read' those all night so it stands to reason that he wouldn't play trains all night, either. And if he did, we could certainly move the train table back into the playroom where it was. I was worried the train table would take up the playroom but it really doesn't. Of course now I want to get him a play kitchen and we'll need the room in the playroom for that so the train table might just move into his bedroom. :)
