Sewing Newbie: Which Machine to get?

Hi, I would like to buy a sewing machine to start sewing. Which machine do you recommend that's in the $150-$250 range and that has practical features and easy to use. Any good ones sold at Target, Walmart, Michaels? I will also check on my local Craiglist to see if I find one, but would like to see what you recommend before I look.
