I am looking for a nice book of fairy tales. I would like to stay away from the Disney versions, because I don't want my dd to "need" all of the merchandise that comes with the Disney princesses. The other books of fairy tales we have are really pretty dark (and actually quite dull). Does anyone have any recommendations?

As most were written as teaching device for adults, most fairy tales are dark and scary. If you are looking for a collection of nice short stories, I recommend "Stories for Children" by Isaac Bashevis Singer.

Eileen,

Have you seen this older thread? I had it bookmarked.
You might find something posted in here.

Usborne has a fairy tale book that my DD loves:

It has modified versions of 5 classic fairy tales.

We have these too, and they are fairly light hearted versions of the scary tales. My DD does not like Disney stories at all, they are way too scary.
