DD is walking around the house with a wicker basket around her neck saying, "pack pack". apparently she'd like a backpack. any ideas? i'm not sure i want it to be a character pack (i'm sure they make dora ones) because i try to avoid character toys (i don't want her obsessed with anything). but if that purple backpack is my only option i guess that's fine....anything else out there?

Well, if its any consolation, the Dora phase here lasted about a year, now we've moved on to Disney Princesses and Thomas the Train.... :)

If she wants to wear it, I'd say go as small as possible. We've got a small Samsonite ladybug one (d/n hold much), a slightly larger Strawberry Shortcake one (Walmart I think), and a full-sized Dora one for daycare.

You could also try a "real" kids backpack from REI or LE. We have these two:

REI pack (I think its this one we have, the color is different): http://www.rei.com/product/725231

LE (don't have this one, but looks like a good size): http://tinyurl.com/ytr8ej

Both those may be too big now, so you'd have to limit what you put in them.

We have this Deuter one and its a PERFECT size for the under 5 set if you want her to actually wear it. Very popular here. MEC does ship to the US, but not this particular item:

Its a bit small for a lunchbox and extra gear for daycare or school, but for out and about at the zoo or wherever with her wearing it, its definitely the best fit for my DD#1. She has the pink one, it came with a stuffed bear, AND its not a character one! :)

My 18 mo son has a little round back pack that I got at target for my first child. Its very smal and fits just his bathing suit or a diaper in it but he loves to carry his own stuff.
Look around for a little lightweight pack. I think I found this one with the swim stuff at target.
My 4 year old has a small pottery barn backpack he's had for over a year. Its a little heavy for him when full but if its lightly packed he carries it. He used it as his carry on when we flew in february.

My 2 yr old also asked for a backpack. I found a CUTE Disney Princess one at Kohls on sale for $10.50. She loves it!

Megs,

These are the cutest backpacks and they are available in a million different
colors/patterns.

My old neighbor used to work for Dickies and her kids had tons of these
backpacks.

I plan to order a couple of these backpacks for kindergarten this fall.

We needed something really small (over sized bags on kids drive me bonkers) so I picked up the Fleurville backpack lunch box used on Ebay. It has been great. Red and orange and awesomely character free.

****Rocking out while parenting my smart little munchkin Toby. Just trying to do good in the world, a little at a time. Words to live by: it is *never* the wrong time to do the right thing :)

My ds got one of these for his second birthday: http://www.ldembroidery.com/Stephen-Joseph-Quilted-Backpacks.htm He got the cute red airplane one. These are a pretty good size bag for a two-year old but not so tiny that it's not usable for a while.

Oh, and his name embroidered on it, too.
