Target has Brio track on sale. The starter set is 19.99 down from 29.99. Is this a good price? Is it compatiable with Thomas trains? What's the disadvantage (if any) to it being only one-sided?

Hoping to buy ahead for my DS's second b'day! Thanks!

Brio, Thomas, and the generic no-name-brand at Target are all compatible.

I'm not sure what you mean by one-sided? Are you just comparing to Thomas that has the road look on one side and the train look on the other? I don't own any Brio, but I would assume you can flip the pieces over (like so a curve can go to either the left or the right). Even my cheapo-generic tracks do that!! :)

If you particularly want a Thomas set, use a 40% off coupon at AC Moore or Michael's. That would make a $29.99 set even cheaper... under $18.

We love Brio. I have all Brio track and accessories and a very small amount of Thomas trains. It's completely compatible. Brio isn't one sided it just doesn't have that cross hatching design that Thomas has but it has absolutely no implications.
I don't know what's included in the track package at Target but it sounds like a great price to me

We have both Brio and Thomas and they are interchangeable, except I've noticed some of the taller trains are too tall to fit into the Brio tunnel we have but that's about it.

If you have brio track --hill climb, it won't work w/battery Thomas. If you look at the Thomas hill climb track, it has ridges cut into it so the wheels can catch. If you aren't going to use battery Thomas, I don't think it matters. The only other thing about mixing is the bridge height as noted by PP. I know that one of our local toy stores has maxim track that looks compatible w/wooden thomas and brio too, but I don't know if it is cheaper.

I think the usual better deals are 40% at Michael's or AC Moore, or the deal now at boscov's w/free shipping for Thomas.
