I'm looking for a small backpack for DD#1. I'm looking for one without wheels, small enough for her to carry, with a main pocket large enough to hold the artwork she brings home - so 81/2 by 11, or a little larger for construction paper. Target had a few about the right size, but I don't want Dora, Diego, or Thomas.

Does anyone use an LL Bean pack at this age? I'm also looking at the Hanna "beach pack"

Any other suggestions?

TIA,

If you can wait a bit longer, Gap Kids will probably have a good one when the back to school stuff comes in. Otherwise I would probably go with the LL Bean Jr. backpack.

Thanks, but I need one soon, right now, in fact. I'll keep that in mind for fall, though.

I could't find a "junior" back pack at LL Bean, but checked Lands End and found some that look great:

Land's End has a nice looking Junior backpack ($26.50):

As well as this NEW "Youngest Girl Backpack" which is looks just about perfect, except it's backordered until june 28 ($26.50):

darn cute, though. I may have to get one when they're available.

I decided to go with the Hanna Andersson Beach pack because it's available now, because it matches the lunchbox we have (the lunchbox can be attached to the backpack) and because when I called the outlet, it was on sale for $14:

Hope this helps someone.

We use packs I bought at Old Navy for $.99 a year ago and they are great!

Thanks for your reply to my post- I didn't want to hijack yours!

Do you have any idea of the weight of the HA one, its very cute but I know backpacks vary a lot in weight depending on structure and padding and I worry about DD carrying it herself across town.

Also how do you get it for $14 it says $28 on the website.

On the Hanna website, look for the "find a location" information. look for the outlets. I found it today by calling the Michigan City one, but you might want to try the one nearest you. I'll let you know the weight when it gets here.

Here's a link to the LL Bean junior back pack: http://tinyurl.com/24hm96

I think the dimensions are very close to the Land's End junior back pack--LL Bean's is about an inch shorter, but an inch deeper.

I would maybe suggest a backpack that was a little larger--I had bought my daughter a small backpack for her preschool and did not get any use out of it. Her class was always using the larger sized construction paper, and making their own hats, etc...and none of her stuff fit in the bag. We ended up going out and getting a regular sized bag--it wasn't too heavy, since the only thing it held was one change of clothes and misc. paper creations.

We just finished a year of preschool with the Lands End Solid ClassMateâ„¢ Junior Backpack. It was great; not too heavy for my older two/young three year old, yet big enough to stuff her snowpants/hat/mittens along with a change of clothes and still have room for her art, ect.

I just washed it on gentle and hung it up to dry and it's in perfect condition to be used again next year and possibly even longer. I've been really happy with it.
