We bought a LL Bean one that matches his backpack. Once he saw that choice there was no going back. :) I am really glad to hear that lead isn't an issue with them. Thank you!

I can't remember what it is in lunchboxes that they tell you to avoid/ be cautious of so I don't know if I should ditch his mainstream Cars' lunchbox from the Disney Store. I heard about the problem last year but tried not to stress too much because everything in his lunch is wrapped up and not in contact with the boxes lining.

What have other people chosen?

It's a lead issue. Something about the vinyl having lead in it. MANY main stream brands have lead tested lunchboxes.... I just looked at some at Target today and they had a little extra tag that said Lead-free!

I was looking at the Lands End lunchboxes for my DS but he is BEGGING for a Pokemon lunchbox and backpack this year. I gotta find out if the one we saw on ebay is lead free or not! Why oh why do they have to grow up and have an opinion on which character is on their lunchbox!!!!

Good Luck

Hey Tondi,

FYI, I got my ds a Pokemon lunchbox at Toys R Us a couple of weeks ago. I haven't seen them anywhere else and looked far and wide.

I thought it was a lead thing. Thanks! I will be checking out the Target selection and checking to see if his Cars' lunchbox has any info on it.

My kids have the LL Bean Critter lunchboxes. In fact, I just emailed LL Bean on Sunday to ask about the lead issue and they emailed me back saying their boxes are lead free.

I chose the LL Bean lunch box which is lead/PVC free (I spoke to customer service about this and they confirmed it). I LOVE it.

However if you want a character lunch box, I also have one with the Disney Princesses on it by Zak Designs (they make tons of character lunch boxes) that are lead free --

Here are the plates/dinnerware:

Here they discuss the lead issue in kids' lunch boxes:

HTH!

BTW, I wrote LLBean (twice) to ask them to include the "lead free" information in their lunch box product description on the website and catalog so that consumers would be assured that they have a safe product and b/c others will buy their product if they know it's lead free.

I use the adult ones that Costco sells (California Innovations and Columbia). They are lead-free (according to the label) and they come with a clear zip-out liner that is super-easy to clean.

Plus, its one less thing in my house that has a character on it!

Crocodile Creek is lead-free and I believe phthalate-free as well. Cute kid patterns, etc.

Even having it on the outside is IMO a cause for concern because they are touching the thing, getting the lead on their hands, and then ingesting it as they eat their sandwich, etc. (I spent time working in the HR dept of a battery manufacturer in high school and college, and later interned in their health and safety dept, so lead is something I feel pretty strongly about. They always cautioned workers about the need to scrub hands thoroughly before eating because it can get under fingernails, etc. Obviously much less lead in a lunchbox, but since kids eat w/ their hands, it is something to consider).

If you wanted to test the lunchbox you have, you can get a kit at Lowes/Home Depot for about $6. It's a little swab you squeeze and rub onto whatever you want to test.

I just did DD's Princess luncbox (purchased last year) and of course the swab was glowing pink - it has lead! She's going to be devastated, but we'll get a new one.

For girls, I love the Vera Bradley "Out to Lunch" bags.
