My son was pretty old when he went in the big bathtub -- probably 3 1/2. We used a rubbermaid tub for a LONG while, then put that in the bathtub, then just the bathtub. He didn't like the openness, as you said. He was really happy in the rubbermaid tub.

Is the rubbermaid tub inflatable or just plastic? I'm not opposed to getting something else to use in the tub, but the inflatable ones are too small now and he's over the weight limit for them.

When DD went through her afraid of bath stage we used a small inflatable pool from the dollar store. Worked great.

It was a plastic tote for storage (which is what it's being used for now). Sorry -- I just associate it with bathing so much much I call it a tub.

ETA: The sides were about a foot or a foot and a half tall.
