I just realized DS' birthday is around the corner. What were the big hits with your 4 year old? Something that would not take a ton of space.

we'll be getting him more books for sure as he loooves us reading to him but what else?

Littleman's 4th birthday is fast approaching, too. I can second the bike recommendation- we got him a bike with training wheels this summer and it's been a big hit.

For his birthday (and Christmas) I am considering a few things.
- household "tools" from http://www.forsmallhands.com (we already have a broom and a mop and a couple other things, and he really enjoys them)
- hot wheels cars and accessories (a current obsession)
- a version of "Memory" (the game), and a set of dominoes
- some dress-up stuff, especially this soft knight's sword and shield set:

maybe other stuff- I just love some of the dress up stuff at nova natural, though it is expensive
- art supplies
- books
- another magazine subscription- he already gets "Click" magazine, and loves it. I think "Ladybug" or "High Five" might be good as well.
- a Root Vue Farm
- maybe a Rody horse? (though younger brother might get it instead)

- maybe Colorforms?
- and I think he'd really enjoy one of those tree house dollhouses, with the little family and animals. . . but they are pretty expensive.
(Like this- http://www.backtobasicstoys.com/item/productid/5417 ) If I had more time, I'd make one. Maybe I still will. . . but it won't be this year!

Those are some of the ideas I have had- I'll have to choose. . . and he's getting old enough that he has some of his own ideas about what he wants, so I will try to respect that as well. (Within limits, of course).

Magna-Tiles :)
wooden blocks
Matchbox cars
Lego

Actually, if I had my druthers, I would keep all of the above, wooden train and track and playsilks and get rid of just about everything else for DS1.

We bought my DS a 16" bike with training wheels, 2 books, Yahtzee Jr., and a small Matchbox set.

He asked for Thomas and Geotrax. I know that my SIL got him a few Geo trax pieces and Art Supplies.

We asked MIL to get him a Leapster from Costco.

He turns 4 on Friday so we'll see how he likes his gifts.

I have a question for you. You said you got a 16" bike for your DS. We are looking at getting a bike for our DS who will be 4 in Oct. but we want to give it as a Christmas present. He is 39" tall right now. How tall is your DS? Let me know how he likes his bike and fits on it. I was a little afraid to get him a 16" bike and it be too big. But will a 12" bike only take him through a year?

Thanks

B

for the other mom, we asked for Thomas Legos for his coming b-day and he already has Geo Trax and LOVES them as well.

At my DS's last checkup (about a month ago) he was 41" tall. We've taken him on test drives and he's ridden the 16" bikes around the store and did pretty well. They do make 14" bikes so that might be a better choice for your son.

Good luck!
