I have finally broken down & bought a sandbox/picnic table thing for the girls. Well, we finally got our backyard done so I could get it for them. I have a couple weeks before it gets here but can you tell me where to get sand? Home Depot? Lowes? What type of sand should I look for and what can I expect to pay? Any help would be appreciated. Oh, the sandbox holds 300 lbs of sand. This is what it is:

I bought play sand for $5.99 (50 lb. bag) at Toys R' Us. I'm not sure if it is a summer only/seasonal item. You pick up the paper slip for it, and they bring out however many bags you need. From what I've heard, you want to buy "play sand" specifically b/c it is cleaner more safe to play with than normal sand.

Our local garden place carries play sand.

Home depot has play sand - its $2-3/bag. Each bag is 30 or 40 lbs, I think?

We initially bought sand from Toys R Us, I think, but when we opened up, it seemed really gross...dirty or something, can't really remember. Anyway, we called a landscaping rock/gravel supply place and they had nice beach sand for a good price.

make sure it is play sand and not construction sand -
they clean play sand - so it is safe for our kids
construction sand has glass shards in it (used for building houses etc)

We are actually adding some sand to our sandbox today. We get it from Lowes or Home Depot. It is inexpensive and sandbox grade sand. We also like it since most of the sand ends up in the yard (or in the house) and you have refill it every summer with some additional sand. So it is cheap enough to do that. Good luck!

Someone told me that pool filter sand is the best. Haven't tried it yet!

You can get sand from Home Depot or Toys R us. The sand from Home Depot has alot of gravel and small pebbles in it. I didn't like it. The sand from Toys R US is white and soft- like sand from a tropical island. The boys seem to like it much better.

By the way, whatever sand you get make sure it says "Play Sand" on the container. Some sand is used for commercial applications and contains crystalline silica which is basically just sand ground so fine that it can be inhaled. Here's some info about it:
