Seriously, blocks are pricey. And they are NEVER available used around me. NEVER, CL will have the odd tiny set or too but they are usually priced as much or more than new. Consignment stores never seem to have them either. They are certainly things people seem to keep for their grandkids etc.

So what are the the best value you have found for wooden unit blocks? Toby plays with his starter set every day now and I think I would like him to have more as he loves to build very tall things with more than one tower.

Craft stores often carry the M&D blocks and you can use the 40% off coupon.

We bought Barclay blocks from online and like them very much. They were a splurge. You can buy their 2nds and save a little. All in all the blocks were less investment than the Thomas train stuff. :)

We have Guidecraft unit blocks that I picked up at either Marshalls or TJ Maxx several years ago around this time of the year. I think they usually have them before the holidays. It was around $17 for 35 pieces.

True about them being cheaper than trains for the most part. But oh so much of Toby's train collection was collected used or on mega sale, something I have yet to see with unit blocks.

Thanks for the reccomendation.

Ditto on the Guidecraft blocks. I bought them for my dc 2 years ago at Marshalls, and I know that Marsalls had them again last year before Christmas also.

I also rationalized a little because my husband wanted the blocks too. They were almost a present to him. I was the one that got into the trains, and now the Holztiger animals -- I was just marking the catalog with the ones I want last night. :)

I picked up the Melissa and Doug set at TJMaxx last year or the year before.

Matthew has the set from Guidecraft (I got it at Marshalls) and then the architectural set from Melissa & Doug. I found the M&D on a nice sale online. Both are a lot cheaper than Barclay.

LOL, I had the exact problem. After 3 months of CL and garage sales, I gave up and ordered the Starter Set from Community Plaything. It was recommended by other BBB posters when I did a Search previously. Anyhow, though they are a bit expensive, I believe they are worth every cent. My 4 years old boy has been playing with them everyday for the last 2 years while completely ignoring all his Thomas sets. :( The blocks have have been airports, fire stations, library, forts, you name it....... By the way, my son really likes this book, even if the pictures are mostly black and white.
