I'm thinking of getting an easel for my niece (5 now, 6 in February) and her brother (3) for Christmas. Is that a good gift for those ages? Would they be able to use it for a while? I'm a bit worried about it being too "young" for K. now that she is a big kindergartener. :)

I like this one from IKEA: http://tinyurl.com/2ttr4e for the price (money is tight right now), and because one side is a chalkboard.

I'm so tired of being sent a list of requested gifts that all require batteries. I'm trying to encourage creativity. :)

I don't know about 6 year olds, but we got a Melissa and Doug easel for DD#1's 4th birthday and it was a hit -- it is probably her favorite toy to date. Art supplies of all kinds were the best 4 year old gifts.

I've seen the Ikea easel, and it's very nice for the price. I'm not a fan of chalk boards in general because of the dust. Ours has one, but we don't use it.

If you have time and inclination to watch Amazon, the M&D easel gets put on sale once in a while for about $30 with free shipping. It's $37 right now, but the price might drop after the holidays or on a random Friday sale. http://tinyurl.com/2dan6j

Thanks, Karen. The M&D one looks nice - I'll watch for a sale. We celebrate Christmas when we get together for Thanksgiving, so I have a few more weeks but not as long as most people have for Christmas shopping. :)
