I don't know if it's too much for a 3 1/2 year old- it does look cool. My concerns would be quality, durability, and whether all the information would be a distraction at this age. I've never seen the globe IRL, so I don't know how it would hold up.

I can say that we bought Littleman a "plain" globe for his 3rd birthday, and he has LOVED it. We pull it out all the time to illustrate where things are in the world, and where we and various other family members live. It has cities and outlines of political boundaries, but is colored naturalistically to illustrate different climates (deserts, grasslands, forests, tundra etc). It also has relief, both positive (for mountains) and negative (for undersea topographical features). It was an excellent purchase, and being non-electronic, should continue to "work" for years to come.

This looks like what we have:

(and I think we paid more than that- we bought at a local specialty B&M store)

I hope you find just the thing you are looking for! :) I think a globe is a great gift.

slight hijack, to give you not a globe recommendation, but a shower curtain recommendation... i wanted to tell you that we have a shower curtain with the world map on it that dd loves. we spend her entire bath and some potty trips discussing geography.

i got it at target for about $15.

we do have a GIANT globe that was a blow up globe--made out of lightweight plastic--exactly like a beach ball. it has a little hook on it so you could hang it up. DD's was a gift her uncle got her from a specialty map store (like rand mcnally).

ours sort of looks like this:
