DS2 (almost 4) informed me that he wants pirate toys for Christmas... He wasn't very specific, so I figured you ladies would have some great suggestions!

Well, I don't have any specific recommendations because this is pretty new to me too. My almost three y.o. is very into pirates right now, so I was definitely planning on getting him some pirate stuff too. I don't know which one yet, but I want to get him a ship:

FP Little People:

Plan Toys:

There are more elaborate sets as well:

Playmobil:

Does he have a pirate costume?? We have a ton of hats from Oriental Trading left over from a birthday party, but you could check out kidsurplus too.

Do you have any pirate books?? Here is a thread from when I asked for recommendations for pirate books:

Good luck!

My DS is also asking for a pirate ship - it's the one in the Target ad (Imaginetix?) but I'd like to find a wooden one - i'll check out the ones the PP poster mention.

Are Plan todays carried in any major chains? Or stores ala Marshalls?

Costume stuff?

Klutz makes a book where you build ships, could be a fun thing to do together.

Lots of good books!

I've seen the Plan ones and the Playmobil ones in real life and thought they both looked nice. Playmobil is sold at the Target near me (and we don't have an independent toy store) so that helps save $ on shipping.

Playmobil has GREAT pirate toys -- we own most of them. There are a couple of different pirate ships, some islands, lots of different pirates and accessories. After looking at LOTS of pirate stuff, I think the Playmobil ones are better quality, and give more flexible playing than FP, etc. They are more expensive (great resale tho) and do have about a zillion pieces (we take away the little pieces because I can't deal with them!).

Other toys we have include pirate hats, hooks, swords, eye patches, etc. I'd recommend looking for some of this stuff at places like Party America, etc. The Oriental Trading stuff we have got trashed within a couple of days. The ones from the party places have lasted a LONG time. There is an all-foam sword that we have and love. The kids can basically do whatever with it, and not hurt each other. I got it at Meijers, but have also seen it at KBToys and TRU.

I know there is a bunch of Lego/Megablochs pirate stuff, but we don't have any right now. Most of the Lego stuff is aimed at 7+ or 9+ tho. Not sure if there is anything in the Duplo line, but if your DS is into that, you might check.

If you're open to videos, I know that Dora and The Backyardigans have both done pirate episodes and are good. I think the Wiggles have also done one, but haven't seen it.

Pictures books I recommend (and love) are Pirate Pete by Kim Kennedy (very cute, but wordy) and Backbeard the Pirate by Matthew McElligott. If DS is getting into longer/chapter books, there is a new series called Pirate School about kids who are on a pirate ship learning to be pirates. DS likes it very much.

ETA: I forgot to mention the pirate floor puzzle by Melissa & Doug. It comes in a 48 piece and a 100 piece version. Very cool!

If you can't tell, we've been into pirates for a VERY long time here.

My boys (5 and 8) love would agree with the vote for Playmobil. We're short on space so we don't have any of the big ships, but they build "ships" out of Legos and blocks for their Playmobil pirates. But, they would tell you, the ships aren't necessary but the canons (they come in some of the small pirate sets)... that's essential!
