Hello
A friend of mine has this dilema and needs some help asap

The other day Micah was putting up major protestations about having to ride
in the car and when we were about 2 blocks from home I realized he had
COMPLETELY maneuvered out of his carseat and was standing up in the
backseat. Of course the woman next to me starts blowing her horn, and when
I didn't stop immediately (in the middle of the street at a light) to get
him back in she shook her head like I was the biggest idiot on earth. Well,
let's see, adjust him in the street in the middle of traffic or make it to a
safe spot - what do YOU think I did??? Anyway, any suggestions on keeping
him in? We have the AlphaOmega thing with the adjustable height doohickey
on the back, but what Micah does is keep working at the chest clip until he
works it down low, then wiggles and shrugs until he gets one shoulder and
then finally an arm out and then he has plenty of room to get the other arm
out. Now, this thing really is tight, but then my little rascal seems to be
impervious to some restraints!! Admittedly he usually doesn't manage to get
all the way out. I just realize that my angel is TOO quiet and when I look
he's riding with the shoulder straps down around his waist and his arms
completely free - like a little boy who has shrugged out of his suspenders
and is letting them hang free - make sense? Are some carseats better at
keeping them in? Is there anything that doesn't have a chest clip that will
slide up and down??? or do I just opt for handcuffs?

Hi there. Well, we sympathize---we had a little Houdini ourselves!

Beyond the obvious suggestions (making sure the harness in whatever seat you use is snug---no there are no better/worse seats at keeping a child under control if the child wants to contort their way out of the seat), there is just one solution. Stop the car whenver this happens and pull over to the safest spot you can find (parking lot is best). Get out of the car and take the keys with you. Tell your child you aren't going to go any further until they are in their seat and stay there. Sometimes, we'd have to get out of the car and wait 5-10 minutes for our kid(s) to cool off before we could all get rolling again. The mere fact that their favorite tunes stopped playing was often motivitation enough. Of course, this works better in the summer than the winter!

I have a suggestion, though I have to say I've never tried this...Find the spot that the chest clip should rest (I think most manufacturers say at armpit level) then sew a button under the chest clip on both harnesses. In order to shimmy out he would have to force the clip down over both buttons. To see exactly what I mean check out the seatbelts in your car - most have a plastic button to keep the clip from sliding out of sight. I am fairly sure that you will still be able to operate the seat without any problems.

Of course, the Field's suggestion probably works better in the long run, but this might save you a few heart attacks.
