How long is a car seat good for?

I know I've seen it, but I can't seem to find it.

My SIL is giving us her FP Safe Embrace convertible seat that she purchased at the beginning of 2001. I'm sure she hasn't gotten into an accident with it and we would be using it as a backup seat. Anything to be concerned about?

We generally say 10 years is the maximum age for a carseat, unless the manufacturer specifies another limit. I believe it is 7 years for an FPSE, but I may be mistaken.

If it hasn't been in a crash, has all the manuals, labels, appears to be in good condition with no cracks, stress marks, etc, then it should be fine to use it.
