I'd like to get the Marathon for my 3 year old who is just 30.5 pounds and 38 inches but my husband refuses to spend another $250 on a car seat (we have the Roundabout). I know this varies but generally how old is a child when they hit the 65 pound mark???

I bought the Marathon for my dd when she was that size, simply so she could rearface again http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/RFAlbum/SarahMA.aspx She's almost 4 now, and still fits RF at 40 inches.

Annnnnyyyyway....only stockier kids will fit to the *weight* limit, but the *height* limit on this seat is really quite high...49 inches, and a little taller if she carries her height in her legs. So most kids will fit in this seat till at least age 6, maybe 7 for a petite girl.
Here's a picture of a CPSTechs son in the Marathon (second pic down and below) http://pages.ivillage.com/momika/carseatphotos/id24.html

You would get at least 3 years of use out of it...but most importantly, you can keep her harnessed comfortably until she's 40 pounds and ready for a booster (and I'll tell you a secret you can tell your DH...these seats have terrific resale value on ebay...don't ever *buy* a used seat on ebay, but you can sell a good seat there (no wrecks, all part working, manuals included))

HTH!
