This is a new product, and I think it's scheduled to release sometime this year.

www.orbitbaby.com

Thoughts?

I really want to see one in person, I bet it's pretty cool! I don't entirely understand the car seat installation method, but it sounds really user-friendly. Definitely one of those things you need to see in person to understand, I think.

Joseph from Stroll and Go told me about them. I don't remember when exactly they are going to be available for purchase, but I do remember the car seat, base, stroller, and toddler seat will retail for about $1200. Yes, this is a "high-end" product. :)

(I'm going to cross-post this in strollers too.)

hmmmmm I wonder how many people will leave their babies in sideways or rotate them around while the car is moving ... Hmmm ... is that even possible.

But it does look interesting ...

anyone have any info on this seat?

I heard it was at JPMA and they only had the infant unit (there's going to be a convertible unit too, right? I haven't read the page) but it was listed as MSRP 900$ <gasp>

I wonder if they will sell it in the Sharper Image catalog? LOL...if they had had that 10 years ago, it might have been enough enticement for my extreme-yuppie brother (His 1988 BMW even said "SOFTWRE" on the license plate...geeek!) to have children, lol.

$900?!!!!!!!!!!! I was tired and misread that as $90. Good grief. Forget Orbit Baby, and my apologies to anybody who thought I was putting on a ridiculous display of wealth and snobbery. For heaven's sake. I'm considering the Companion and having serious palpitations over THAT!

I think it read as sarcasm and not as snobbery. No worries!

I can't imagine that the seat will last long at that price point.

LOL...I thought I might have another baby,if 900 was cheap to you, I might score a Compass seat and new Bugaboo Frog as shower gifts!

No, seriously, I thought you must've misread it, but it was good for a giggle :D

just saw this thing in person at a high-end baby boutique here in minneapolis. my hubby thought it was the coolest thing in the world. it did look really neat and it was cool to see something different. i have nothing against high-end baby gear (other than that i can't afford any of it), but if i could spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on any baby gear, i personally wouldn't on this piece. seems to have more side-impact coverage, too.

my quick thoughts:

carseat: salesman sold it as the best thing for a really small vehicle, because of how the seat attaches into the base (you put it down sideways and then rotate it forward, whereas most seats you have to put it in forward). i haven't looked at a ton of carseats, but the one thing that struck me was the seat dimensions seemed rather large, like a safeseat maybe? i asked about weight limits and the salesperson didn't know, but online it says 22 lbs, so that's "standard." it felt similar in weight to others, maybe a but lighter, but was streamlined in it's look. one neat thing was it had a thin and slightly flexible strap, not that hard plastic arm most have.

base: this thing is metal and seemed insanely heavy. for a carseat base, who cares? but for a stroller base, i don't think so...

stroller: the chart from their website seems to back this up - http://orbitbaby.com/why/comparisons.html - weight of seat base alone is at least twice that of those they compare to. attachment and all that seemed really easy, but my mind keeps going back to the weight of the base. who wants 7-10 extra lbs in a stroller base? i don't see a weight on the stroller part itself, but you have 19 for the base, 10 maybe for the stroller minimum, and about 10 for the carseat, could that really be? 40 lbs? even if the stroller portion is included in base weight, that's 30 lbs. we didn't fold up the stroller which would be interesting to see. probably wasn't too impressive or they would've showed us ;)

general: once you're done with the carseat (22 lbs or probably 6-12 mos), i would assume you'd get a compatible toddler carseat, but they don't have a toddler carseat that i can tell, just a toddler stroller seat. so you're done with your fancy carseat after 6-12mos. after which you can still use the stroller with the toddler stroller seat. though that's only good up to 40 lbs which might not be too low, but others go up to 55.

if i'm wrong on any of this, please correct me, but i thought i'd throw up some quick comments from someone who's seen this thing in person.

Wow, old thread, and I DID have another baby! I just couldn't justify the cost, no matter how cool the Orbit is. I think if they had come out with the toddler carseat I might have considered it, but they STILL have not done so :(

Don't you just install that mondo heavy base in the car and then leave it there? And then just clip the seat into the stroller?

40 pounds is a decent weight limit for a stroller... it's average for a 4 year old... the Maclarens do go to 55 pounds, but that's average for an 8 year old (there're a few with a 33 pound weight limit, that's a 3 year old... they get really hard to push and steer with older kids!)

They have it at Buy Buy Baby on Long Island - every time I've been in the store there is a crowd gathered around checking it out. The car seat IS really cute and I love that it turns to make it easier to put the car seat into the base.
