We are installing the Marathon in my 2001 Toyota Corolla. What are the recline limits?

Thanks

No more than 45 degrees. If you have an older child with good head control, you can have it less than 45 degrees.

The less recline, the safer it is, except that infants can't be more than 45 degrees since they can't hold their head up yet.

No more than 45 degrees for newborns. As much as 30 or so degrees for older babies.

I could have sworn that the Marathon rear-facing installation directions say to put the seat in the full recline position (i.e. pull the lever that reclines the seat) before installing it. Then the tether makes it recline even more. Is this wrong?

Yeah, you should put it in the recline position, but even with the top tether, it can NEVER be more than 45 degrees reclined...check out the link in my sig...and go to the "album"...only Toby's is installed in the upright position RF, and it's really upright (but actually very safe). Dylan is OVER reclined, you would really never want your seat to look like that. Everyone else is in a good range. Being slightly more upright than 45 degrees assures that the force is spread evenly along the back of the child and the car seat, whereas being more reclined than 45 degrees allows a child to almost "launch" up and out of the seat (well, not that they would with shoulder straps and lapstraps, but it forces more of the force into the shoulders, via the straps, than you'd like).

If the RF tether + the recline position is making the MA over-reclined, try bracing it with the front seat and then tightening the tether. That is what we had to do in our Corolla- Toby hated being reclined and the more upright we could get him (within the 30 degrees) the better!
