Aparently the boss used it for a grandchild and says of course it's never been in an accident. I haven't seen the thing yet and have no idea how old it is.

Would it be sane at all to use this thing (perhaps as a 2nd seat in an infrequently used car?) or would we be asking for trouble? How do I assess its age and recall status?

There should be a sticker somewhere on the seat that has the manufacture date. As long as it's not been over five years and you trust your DH's boss, I think it would be okay to use it.

I'm not sure where to find the recall information. Search for the CPSC maybe?

IF the labels haven't peeled off the thing! Century used the worst labels :P

Here's the recall list http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/childseat.cfm

You might even call Graco (owns Century) and ask the scoop on it, they may tell you not to use it at all.

When you do toss it, make sure no one would ever even think it's a car seat...cover off, straps off, circular saw...or, well, just a black trashbag to make sure no one can see what it is...or people WILL use any old hunk of crap they can find, put a seatbelt over it, and call it a booster :P

Wow, that's positively vintage...does it have a nice teal with pink and yellow accented cover? They did a lot of that back then, lol.

Black trash bag, also full of diapers, big dumpster, it's gone ;)

ROTFLMAO!!!

Was that color/pattern EVER popular? Or was there just no other choice back then? LOL Like did the manufacturers say - hey, lets put out this REALLY ugly pastel fabric and MAKE people buy it!

My MIL tried to "pass down" her used baby gear from the mid-90s baby gear and its ALL in that green/pink/yellow/blue pastel patterned fabric.
I passed on it all for safety reasons but MAN! that stuff was UGLY!
But she had the stroller, the carseats, the highchair, playpen etc etc ... blech!

It SURE makes the BRU Decathlon and Boulevards covers look good! ;)

ok - i'm done being a fabric snob for now! ;)

ps- is it safe to say yet that ANYTHING Century (in regards to carseats) is expired? When did Century cease to exist (when did graco buy them out?)

We're close, very close to all the Centuries being expired... Though I think they were still making them in 2002, so not quite close enough yet :P

Hey, the old Britax covers were pretty darn ugly too... but I agree with the thoughts on the pastel watercolor dropping acid color scheme... it was bad. Especially on a white seat with an overhead bar.
I have a couple of Century seats from 2002, and love them. The Breverra Ascend was an AWESOME seat! I also had the 1000ste or whatever they called it... the seat that became the comfort sport. Also 2002. I just dropped it at the highway patrol a few months ago.
What about Gerry? Is it safe to say all things Gerry are dead? And I never knew... was it Gary or Jerry? I came across a double guard (shield booster) in the back seat of a car recently and was really sad. I left a note on the car, but that was all I could do. And since there were a few old bottles beside the seat, I doubt the child was very old.

LOL!
water color acid dropping!! Too funny!

Who knew carseats could be so funny! ;)

Yeah .. when did Gerry become Evenflo?

I think my friend has some old Gerry seat and I'm not sure how old it is - sure looks old though!

Was anyone else under any other name before too??
