I convinced a mom at our MOMS Club meeting today to buy a Marathon nfor her 6 mo, told her not to get it at BRU, that online would be cheaper. Then went home to check prices and remembered the dumb price fixing policy. Okay, so at least she won't pay tax or shipping, so it is slightly cheaper (and more convenient than schlepping the box home), but still!

Albee has Funky Denim for $214, but that's all I found.

Anyone else find something?

(Ooh, and I met a very nice officer who was doing checks for us today. So many of those moms had bad installs. One mom's seat wasn't even belted in--yikes! I got a CHAD sticker from him and told him briefly about my bad check experience. He gave me his card and asked me to call him.)

Nope, that's it. You can get a bit back through e-bates or other rebate programs - I think the best I saw was 6%, so $15 off. There is a $10 off coupon for BRU floating around somewhere, also.

BTW, in most states you are still responsible for the tax on internet orders, even if the online store doesn't charge it.

I'm confused about the tax thing? What do you mean? :-)

I almost never have to pay sales tax on internet orders b/c I live in a state where most do not have a brick and mortar presence. So I'm curious!

TIA,
kelly

A store is only required to collect sales tax if they have a presence in the state, however, the purchacer is still responsible for paying the tax. (It is widely ignored or not known)

On our income tax returns (Indiana) there is a line for sales tax on out of state purchases. In the instruction booklet, it gives a list of possible items, including magazine subscriptions, internet and mail-order purchases, and a couple others that I can't remember. Basically you add up all these and figure the sales tax on it and pay as part of your income tax.

They have recently cracked down on the non-reporting and said that reporting zero on that line would be a red-flag and might trigger an audit.

We have a CPA do our taxes and he has never asked us for such information.

This year we live in a new state, so we'll see what's required of us.

I think it is state-specific, and some states are more aggressive - Ours is bankrupt, so they are looking for any money they can.

A google of "out of state purchase sales tax" came up with FL, NJ and TX on the first page with statements requiring you to pay.

Here is an article on CNet about this:

Wow, we used to live in CA and that's one of the states mentioned in the article! I guess our CPA wasn't up on the issue or chose to ignore it.

The article basically says that any state that charges sales tax also requires you to pay "use tax" on items purchased via online/mail order where tax is not charged. Wow!

I guess more and more states are trying to enforce it now.

I just read an article in Seattle where a WA state tax official said that there was NO chance of WA state trying to enforce the use tax here. So I happily persist in ignoring it. We don't have an income tax here so the state has no set infrastructure for auditing individuals. I don't feel bad about ignoring it since I pay 8.9% on everything else here and way more on eating out.
