View Full Version : Marathon install in a Volvo

I have a Marathon in a 2000 Volvo S80. It is rearfacing and tethered to the track on the passenger seat. No matter what I do, loose tether, tighter tether, the seat pulls to the right toward the tether and the back corner of the base (closest to the seat back) pops up. Is there a way to fix this? I seem to think it is the way the Volvo seat is contoured because it doesn't happen in our 2002 Toyota Camry. I feel like we have to reinstall once a week because of this. Are DH and I doing something wrong? The Marathon we have in our Camry pulls ever so slightly to the right, but nothing like what it does in the Volvo. Camry has cloth seats and Volvo has leather (and the carseat base is on a prince lionhart protective pad), don't know if that makes a difference?

I'd try a rolled towel under the front of the seat..It would basically look like this http://home.earthlink.net/~carseatsite/reclinewithtowel.jpg
...it should just kind of fill any gaps in there under that curvy seat so there's no room for movement or leverage to take over.
At least I HOPE it will work! :)

I'm sorry if this is a strange question but is the seat in the middle or in the passenger seat? I have installed a MA RF and FF in my Volvo S60 and i got a very tight install even with leather seats and mine is a 2001, so it is just before latch :-(. Maybe try to put the seat without a pad in the passenger seat. Also having one person to pull on the seatbelt and another to sit on the seat/push on the seat can help.

Good Luck

It is actually in the center. In the 2000 S80 the center is slightly raised. I could move it outboard if it would work better. I was just worried about having DS so close to one of the doors.

Do you know if I have to have the car retrofitted for LATCH when I turn DS forward facing?

Yeah, for the top tether, you can add that (not the lower LATCH anchors, though)... there are 3 pre-drilled holes in the rear filler panel, 5/16" bolt, part name "Tether Hook", and the part number is the same for center and outboard seats "39965108-2" and it applied to 1999 and early 2000 models. (Make SURE you get the right part, if they try to make you install it yourself, as some years have 8mm bolts which will strip out your weld nuts).

I really don't know if the install is free, or how much the part should cost, sorry... but call around, and try looking in your trunk up under the package shelf, it might be pretty obvious that's where the part is supposed to go. This isn't the same car, but the installation should be quite similar, I'd imagine http://www.carseatdata.org/Geo_Prism.html

Ha, maybe I'll order the parts for my mom's 1999 S80...seems like she'll have that car forever :D

Thank Julie.

I really want to get rid of the car, since it is a lease that is up in May 06. I am trying not to turn DS FF so I won't have to deal with the issue until we get a new car. I just thought I would be ready incase DS starts to put up a fight about being RF before we get rid of the car.
