Ok, anybody happen to know what seat they are using in this picture? Like the look of the side support. I assume it is a real seat?

Thanks,

Looks like a Britax based on the buckle and label position, but most likely an EU model - possibly a First Class or Eclipse? Might be a Roundabout from a funny angle.

You mean the little photo near the top of the page? That is the much, loved but now sadly discontinued, Fisher Price Safe Embrace convertible. It did have nice deep side wings.

Bummer. It seems i am to be foiled in my attempts to get a Canadian seat i am comfortable with. Has it been discontinued long? I bet it as only a US seat and the Canadian airline used it in its photo anyway.

Deborah, can you give me some idea how the MAs side wings compare to this seat depth wise?? I cant see one IRL.

Thanks!

Morgan, Joseph, and Adam are in FPSE's on this page http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/RFAlbumAll.aspx

Yeah, deepish sidewings, but really zero padding behind and under the baby, so when the head flew straight back, it hit plstic, rather than EPS foam like the Briaxes have. They are all pretty much on the cusp of expiring and haven't been sold new for about 4 years now.

Nice seat...I almost bought one for my first kid in 1997, but the lack of padding was enough to make me reject it, despite it's being the only seat reasonably priced with a top tether and lockoffs... ah well...

Thanks Julie,

Are the wings as deep on a MA? It is hasrd to tell from the pics and I dont know what the equivalent UK model to the MA is to go have a look.

It really doesn't matter how deep the wings are. Unless the seat is *specifically* designed, tested, and sold with Side Impact Protection, then even the deepest wings never contain the head in a front/side impact (which most are...you are usually moving forward when struck laterally...).
Go do a google search for "OEAMTC Kindersitze" and you'll see a variety of crashes (in the archive from 2001/2002 mostly) and you'll see a lot of EU/UK models in action... it's scary!)

Why not the Marathon or even the Roundabout for that matter? They are both Britax and now available in Canada, if that's what you are after.

Hi Tam,

The problem i am having is that their UK car seats are the Concord Ultimax with SIP wings like the BV. We want to keep with that style but as you know the BV isnt available in Canada (how many letters do you think it would take to get Britax to consider it for the Canadian market, lol). So we are left with just getting the BV and ignoring the law or getting a seat *we* feel isnt as safe eg the MA. I know the MA is safe but i guess it is all about your comfort zone as a parent and what you are used to.

So in an attempt to use a Canadian approved seat I am trying to find one which offers some kind of decent head protection. THe MA seems very shallow. The Britax seats in the UK seem to have deeper side rests than the MA. Alhough Julie did explain that even with sides that curve round it still isnt the same as SIP.

Any ideas, I am getting desparate. Onw of my twins in particular is very tall for his age (100th percentile) so I am trying to avoid that Cosco Alpha thingy.

Thanks!
Lynn

Well, I think it comes down to 2 choices: if you are to go legal, the MA is probably your best bet. It is a great seat, even w/o SIP. If you are to go illegal, you can use whatever seat you wish, UK, US, etc.

And you are right about comfort zone and perspective. I have friends living in some part of Europe and they said using carseat is not taken to the same degree as I do, so when they are here and having to use carseat they way I do, they find it 'confining' :)

KWIM?

I think everybody here uses a seat for under 2s but after that... My neighbour has had her son out of his seat since he was 2.He sits in the front of the SUV even without a belt. I just cant understand it.
The one thing that is very rare here is extended rf. I am the only person i know who does it.It is considered more entertaining for the child to be ff here. Although i have to say the guy at Macklems i called about he MA tried to convince me to FF them. He couldnt understand why i am rf 14 month olds, one well on this way to 30lbs.

We dont tether here or have chest clips. And i have to say my dh thinks tethering looks extremely dodgy and isnt at all convinced, lol. It is going to be something new.I have decided against taking our UK seats as they dont tether.

Thanks for your advice.Does anyone keep stats on the actual performance of individual models of seats in accidents?

Ooh, actual seats in crashes... I WISH!
Most crash 'investigation' is a possible line or check box about proper restraint, but not much more.
This page has THE most comprehensive studies that are being done, though http://www.chop.edu/carseat so if anyone is doing that, they are.
