But it looks like someone hit it with a hammer. Wouldn't even a new seat break being hit like that?

I guess I just think that's so different. I seatbelt can withstand a severe accident, yet you could probably destroy the buckle with a hammer. I guess this does show that the plastic became brittle after 10 years.

Yeah, shoulda mentioned that....NO, absolutely NOT will a new seat break like that with a hammer. I've tried whacking even 4 yo seats with a sledgehammer and they just deafen you and the hammer bounces back into you with amazing force (lol, trust me, ouch.)... you just can't hammer through a newer seat.
But yeah, if a hammer can do that with one or two little whacks imagine how easily the straps would pull through the back of the seat. :O
