Jools has posted these before, but I can't find them by doing a search.

What seat does this apply too? Is this something they have fixed?

Many seats require the harness to be in the top slots if FF because those are the only ones reinforced with steel. The lower slots are just through plastic and if you have the harness through these while FF, the plastic isn't strong enough and will break.

Britax Marathons and Roundabouts are some of the only ones that are reinforced in all positions. That's why we spent the extra $$ and bought the Britax. Maddie

Some seats are all reinforced (Britax, Cosco Alpha Omega, Evenflo Triumph), and some don't have reinforced lower slots, or slots that are only ok to use to 30 pounds (Comfortsport...you can only use the middle slots FF up to 30 pounds). All forward-only harnessed seats all have all reinforced slots (oh, except for the top headrest postions on the Alpha Omega, Summit, and the top two Recaro Young Sport headrest positions).

Yikes, that is one scary picture. Seems to me if car seat manufacturers should be fool proofing their seats and reinforcing all slots (kudos to the manufacturers that do!). Even a safety fanatic can forget to do things right at times. Heck, I just realized today that I needed to check the height max for my daughter's high back booster seats. Luckily the top of her ears is not yet above the top of the seats, but I realized how easy it would be to let your child outgrow it slightly before noticing.

Do ALL the models of the Evenflo Triumph have completely reinforced slots? On another board I post on a woman says she has a Triumph and in the manual it says: "WARNING: DO NOT use the two lower sets of harness slots for FORWARD facing. This harness may not properly restrain the child in the event of a crash." She wasn't sure of the manufacture year of her seat, but her manual lists a date of September 2003. Other women on my board say they also have Triumphs that are labeled on the actual seat that the top and middle slots can be used for forward-facing but not the bottom slot.

What about the Cosco Scenera? I just bought one for my dad's car for DS2. I didn't notice any mention of certain slots only being used for FF, like some other Cosco seats. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Can I just say that that photo scares the crap out of me?! Wow.

I just checked my manual for the Canadian Graco ComfortSport (piece of crap -- have I mentioned that before?!) and it also says as Jools said above, to only use the top slots FFg after 30lbs. It is in what I think is a rather obscure part of the manual and I didn't see that before. Scary because DD is 28lbs and we just moved her harness up to the top slot when she reached 28lbs -- we had no idea.

Another reason I hate that seat. :(

Does anyone know if the Evenflo Vision harnessed booster has reinforced harness slots, especially on the lower settings? I just got that seat last week for DD to use at DC. It fits great and the DCP really likes the seat for its ease of use and lightweight. Now, I'm just freaked about the harness slots and I don't have the seat in front of me.

TIA

Yep, since the Vision is a ff only seat - all the slots are re-inforced.

I agree about the ComfortSport manual. There have been a couple of seats that I knew the rules for, but couldn't find the part in the manual on the first read through or two.

Should it not be "only use the top slots ff TO 30 lbs" instead of AFTER? It would not make sense if it's AFTER.

Thanks.

The first way is correct - for FF after the child is 30 lbs, you can only use the top slots.

The seat goes to 40 lbs. FF, so if you can "only use the top slots ff to 30 lbs", what would you do from 30-40?

Nevermind, I got my wires crossed tonight... Was thinking of middle slots and said top slots, and before 30 lbs and then after 30 lbs, etc.

I blame cheap drug :)

I'll have to find the post from the Evenflo Rep on the CPSPList, but since the same bar moves up and down and holds the harness the same way, there's no reason that the center slots are NOT reinforced, and he said that new manuals would say the middle slots are ok for FF, and the rule would be grandfathered in. They just said 'top slots only' at first to prevent confusion and keep sort of the same rules, but discerning consumers won't let them get away with it (we can SEE it's reinforced, don't give us empty rules! ;) ). They won't allow the bottom slots at all, because kids in the bottom slots are WAY too young and small to be FF, so even though they ARE strong enough, Evenflo really doesn't want those kids to FF.

Looking at the manual now - pg 12 Under "Forward-Facing Position" there is a picture of the seat with arrows pointing to all four slots and next to it says "Determine which set of harness slots works best for your child. Adjust if needed."

I interpret that to mean you can use any set of slots.
