I wasn't planning on buying/using a car seat mat, because I'd read they interfere with proper installation and safety, but recently, I've gotten advice in the other direction. So I'm looking for more opinions: Why would/do you use a car seat mat? If you recommend one, which brand/style? Or, why shouldn't/don't you use car seat mats? I need advice! Thanks.

I don't use a mat. I don't see a need for it.

Using a mat can lead to more movement/slippage of the car seat.

I'm curious to know who gave you alternating advice? Was it a CPS tech? Our local firehouse has three CPS tech's, and I've asked them a couple of times about stuff like this, just to see if their opinions differ or change over time. Each and every time they have told me that nothing should come between the carseat base and the vehicle seat. They also strongly discourage baby mirrors or any toys afixed to the back seat as those objects become projectiles in the event of an accident.

Check in with your local CPS tech and see what they say before you buy a mat.

Good luck,

Mats are not nessecary, either for proper installation or for seat protection (car upholstery is really sturdy stuff...dents pop out, food wipes up....). A THIN mat may be fine, and there may even be a recommendation about this in your carseat manual. Thick mats can really interfere with installation. Shelf liner is ok, but I've heard it can melt to seats, so I don't trust it.
