I know the car seat is outgrown when the top of a childs ears reach the top of the carseat. Is this when the child is leaning his head back against the seat, or just when the child is sitting in the seat, head not against the back?

Hi Candy. There probably isn't much distance between the child's head when he's sitting normally and when he's laying his head back. The reason for this rule is to provide whiplash protection, so we want to check when his head is back against the seat.

Don't forget the other 2 rules for when a forward-facing seat is outgrown: the shoulders reach the top harness slots OR the weight limit is reached.
