Went to grandma's to drop off DS for the morning, and grandpa got their Touriva out of the basement so I could install it in their car.

There was mold all over the harness straps and the seat cover. I threw the seat into a garbage bag and brought it home to clean, after putting my seat in their car.

So far my plan is to wash everything in bleach/hot water --- is that going to be good enough? I have to put the carseat shell into my washtub in order to soak the straps that won't come off. I'm not concerned about how it looks after, just whether or not all the mold is dead.

Any thoughts? Or should we just toss it and get something else? (I hesitate to do this as DS is going to grow out of this seat in the next 6 months and the next harnessed seat is going to cost a lot more.)

You can't wash or soak the straps and DEFINATELY don't bleach the straps - It'll comprmise their integrity and they could fail in an accident.

Honestly, I'd pitch the whole seat - mold is tricky - unless you TOTALLY kill it it'll keep coming back and you don't want your child sitting in a moldy seat.

Sceneras are only $39 right now at wal-mart and k-mart - I'd go and get one of those to replace the Touriva ... basically the same thing.

Well - since I can't wash the straps (which were very nasty) I guess I have to pitch it.

Should I just go ahead and get a Cosco Apex (to replace DH's touriva and theirs?) DS is tall in the torso so he's pretty close to maxing out his Touriva harness. Frankly there aren't that many situations where we couldn't transfer over a seat for them rather than them having their own. Is the Apex is to use/install for grandparents?
