Right now we have a RA in both cars but Ellie is reaching the tall side so I'm figuring out our next step. Ellie spends the vast majority of her time in my car. The plan is to put a Regent in my car because it will stay in there all the time. The problem child is DH's car. It is an 95 two-door Honda Civic. There is no LATCH and the "head rests" are only a few inches higher than the rest of the seat back. I would like a seat that keeps her harnessed as long as possible. Ellie only rides in his car occasionally but that would be the seat that we use for traveling or riding in friend's cars so I'd like something easier to tote around than a second Regent.

Any ideas?

What does Ellie weigh now? That might help us decide :)

OK, I just checked. Ellie is 3 1/2. She weighs about 33lbs. She is 39" tall.

So, she really does still have some life in the RA but at around $250 a seat, it could take some time to get two new ones. I'd like to be prepared.

You could actually go cheap on this seat, since she's such a good average size...the Evenflo Generations is a great harnessed seat till a full 40 pounds/age 5ish, and then becomes a really nice booster, and while more expensive, the Recaro Young Sport is a fantastic harnessed seat AND a really nice side impact protective booster, that, too, will get her to 40 pounds and then be a booster (it's like 250, the generations is 100ish, the quality is reflected in the prices, but either is quite safe when used properly).
