My first daughter used her Snugride for 4.5 months, and was not in any accidents. She was born March 2005, the seat was purchase a few months before. Have there been any meaningful safety improvements in the three years that have passed? I can afford a new one if there is good reason, but if nothing has really changed I'd reuse the seat for #2 (due in December!)

The Snugride should be perfectly safe! I would save the money and invest in a good convertable seat when the time comes.

Yup, perfectly safe. If you find you 'need' a bucket that fits a lot bigger, you might keep an eye out for a Safeseat 1 on sale... My dd fit in it till 20 months, which was nice, since she didn't walk till 15 months, and there were some cold rainy spring days where it was easier to carry her in the bucket than in my arms to the car.
