We had to take the twins to the doctor this morning in my husband's car. Well, he doesn't have bases for Safeseats in his car. But I was almost sure that the base was just for convenience sake- the infant carrier could be strapped into a car safely without the base. Am i wrong? Because we had a he** of a time getting them to go in safely this morning.

Yup, that's why they have those belt guides on the sides of the seat... for the lapbelt to go in. It's a different type of install you're going for...basically the thing to test for is that the belt is tight and locked, and that the head/top of the seat can't be pushed downward. It won't be solid, but it's still extremely safe if the belt's locked (or you have a locking clip, in the case of an older car).
