View Full Version : really need your help - BJCSD and Valco Twin Runabout questions (long-TIA)

I need all of your expert opinions. I have a 3yo and twins on the way. I live outside the U.S. in a city with lots of rough streets. We do a fair amount of walking almost all outside (mostly streets, some off-roading and some shops but no malls). We have a mid sized family car (and figured out how to seat 3 across with the help of the Radian) with a generously sized trunk. With my 3yo I used a Bugaboo frog exclusively and was very happy with it. Taking it in and out of the car all the time wasn't the most convenient in the world but with one child, I managed. We are looking for ONE and only one stroller at the moment now too for financial reasons, for the lack of space in our small apt and bc we think more than one stroller would be a huge hassle and we would always have the wrong one at the wrong place at the wrong time.
I narrowed my choices down to the ABC buggy or the Valco with the toddler seat. DH was recently in the US on business and was supposed to see them IRL and decide. He **hated** the ABC buggy, he thought it was flimsy and the fold was way too long. He also had a lot of issues with the Valco - I don't quite remember all of them but the canopy and the inadequacy of the underneath basket were two. The handlebar was also too short. We are both quite tall and if we need to attach a buggy board the handlebar needs to be that much taller. DH also didn't feel the toddler seat was a necessity and I tend to agree, since DS is 3 and can walk quite a lot. If I ever want to get out of the house with the three of them though, I will need to keep him contained and have a way for him to ride if he gets tired. I think that a buggy board type thing will be good for him. He loves skateboards so that seems like a good solution for DS#1. DH was impressed by the BJCSD and thinks that's what we should get.
So, now that you know my background, my questions are:
-What is the difference btw the 2006 and 2007 Valco Twin. Do any of the changes have to do with the issues that concerned my DH?
-How valid are these issues?
-What is the difference btw the 2006 and 2007 BJCSD besides the new beautiful colors? How high is the handlebar? Has anyone attached a buggy board to it? How has that worked out?
-Which stroller do you think we should get given our needs?
-I'm also second guessing myself and starting to consider whether it is possible to go for a 'lightweight' stroller such as the Maclaren Twin Techno as our only stroller. I'm sure I'd have to work harder pushing it in the street but the fold and taking in and out of the car would be easier. Also, it's narrower and I would have an easier time getting into shops although I've pretty much given up on that seeing how most shops here don't even have the aisle room for a single stroller. How impossible is it to maneuver on uneven streets and inconsistent pavement? Would I be able to attach a buggy board to it?
In short - what do you all think????

Thanks for reading through all of this. I can't wait to hear what you think.

IIRC, the BJCSD does not have enough room for a buggyboard.

What about a MBUD? I know people put buggy/kiddy boards on those.

Just tossing out ideas here: e3 Twin, BOB Revolution (2007 will have a full recline). Not sure if those take buggy boards, though.

Both the Valco and MBUD are narrower than the Maclaren. You will be hatin' life pushing that on bad roads.

Strollerqueen and Melissa,
Thanks for the input. I see your point on the Maclaren, it was just an idea I had in a moment of doubt. So, between the BJCSD and the Valco, which do you think would be better for us and can you attach a board to the BJCSD.

Unfortunately, no, you can't attach a board to the BJCSD. There is a bar going across the back of the handle, so there isn't enough head room for an older child. If you get the Valco, at least you have the option of adding the toddler seat, too. Really nice to know that you can add a seat if you need to.

A buggy board will not work on the BJCSD, sorry. There's no headroom for the board rider, not enough space inside the handlebar for their head and shoulders.

Which Valco did your DH see? The TriMode doubles are just out. Did he see that or the original Runabout? We have the Runabout single with toddler seat and have loved it. We got it when my DS was almost a 4yo and DD was 6mos. That's about when I finally gave in to the realization that I needed to have the option of a seat for DS when necessary. We used the toddler seat for about a year when we did all day outings. I'd guess that you will need the toddler seat option with a 3yo.

If you do get a Valco, go with the TriMode. Valco made a lot of very nice upgrades on the TriMode. The Runabout has been our workhorse stroller and it seems that everything that bugged me on it has been improved on the TriMode.
