Extending Kidco gates

Does anyone have a clever way of extending the Kidco gates in their home by 1 inch? The gates I want to purchase are 1/2" and 1" shorter than the width of our walls. I really didn't want to spend the money for the extensions for the extra inch. I thought I could use the gate installation kit to gain an extra inch even though I don't need it for mounting purposes.

Or has anyone tried putting in an extra board in the wall and mounting the gate? Ugly but cheaper, I think.
