Anyone have any suggestions for a cheaper option than this one for an oddly shaped space which leads to both the stairs and front door? Or has anyone used this gate? Thanks!

There's the Wide Spaces Gate by Evenflo: http://www.evenflo.com/pr/ga/prga_widespaces.phtml It's cheaper, but according to Cara1, it's not a very good option. See her comments in this thread: http://www.windsorpeak.com/dcforum/DCForumID8/172.htm

I have the Kid Co. Configure Gate and think it's great. It has the easiest release of any I've tried. You have to push it in hard enough that a child won't be able to operate it for quite awhile, but you merely need to squeeze the handle to release it, and, thus, can do it with one hand. You can also mount it on walls at different angles and you don't have to drill into your baseboard to mount it. You can also lift it off the mounting strips if you want to remove it occasionally too. I highly recommend it.

The walls-at-different-angles issue is my main problem with this space. I haven't done any baby proofing yet. But DS can now roll like a log, so I better get thinking about it! Just been dreading, I guess. But that gate sounds promising - I'll check it out! Thanks!

Welp, DH and I are in the midst of baby gate HELL right now, and I would like to second the sentiments of Cara1 - this Evenflo gate is HORRIBLE. DH just spent 3+ hours installing it to find the essentially it won't work on a carpeted floor or unless there's AMPLE room for the stupid foor pedestal to rest. Can you tell I'm frustrated?? :)

Back to square one - likely will bite the bullet on the KidCo gate. Learned the hard way it's likely worth it!!
