Table and Floor Lamps : How to make them safe?

currently our decorating is BORING!!! this is in anticipation of the crawling stage which has yet to happen.

but i'm going crazy with our overhead lighting (i don't like overhead lighting in the living room). is there a way to have table and/or floor lamps safely? or is it just too risky at this stage? we don't really have any spots where we can put table lamps "out of the way" so i'm curious what others do.

My only floor lamps are either behind very large pieces of furniture or behind a gate. But mine are the older style halogen ones that are fairly dangerous (should probably replace them), so I'm pretty paranoid about them.

M hasn't gone for our table lamps yet, but we use the electric cord wind ups so that she's not tempted to yank on a cord.
